Storyline

Inspector Wallander and his team investigate a murder and an unexplained death. They arrest 18 year old Sonja Hokberg after they find a taxi driver stabbed to death in his car. Sonja is found covered in blood and freely admits to the killing, though she provides little additional information. In the second case, the police find a dead man on the street who was apparently using the ATM. He is Denis Falk and the police learn that he had just recently been given a clean bill of health after a thorough medical exam. When Sonja escapes from her jail cell and Falk's body is stolen from a mortuary, the police discover a link between the two. When they find Falk's computers running a mysterious program however, they find they are dealing with a terrorist plot. Wallander's social life takes a positive turn when his daughter Linda signs him up at a dating service and he gets a call from an attractive divorcée. Could this be the start of a new life? Kenneth Branagh continues his portrayal of Kurt Wallander, the morose, driven policeman who holds forth in Sweden. In this offering, a young woman is killed and then dumped on some power lines, causing a district-wide blackout. The body of another man, murdered earlier, has been stolen. All this leads to a plot by some terrorists to set off a catastrophic event. A young man known for his computer skills is brought into the fold to try to figure out what is going on. Apparently, there is some grand design to all this and our hero must sort everything out. Branagh seems permanently depressed. He loves his daughter who recommends that he get out in the dating world, now that there is no hope of saving his marriage. He meets an attractive woman who starts to fall for him, but there is more to the story. Some of the technology is, quite literally, cryptic. We know that there is an endgame, but for most of us viewers, the science is so hard to follow as to be incomprehensible. Still, the slow pacing allows Wallander/Branagh to flex his acting skills.
