With its prescient visions of violence and alienation in cyberspace, this bizarre anime looks all the more impressive 22 years on
This year sees the live-action remake, starring Scarlett Johansson, of the 1995 Japanese anime classic Ghost in the Shell; as a curtain-raiser, the original is getting a small release, just a couple of years after it last reappeared in UK cinemas. It really is one of the most futuristic and strange movies imaginable and its status as animation, occupying its own exotically precise universe, means that it has arguably aged better than live-action movies like Blade Runner or Total Recall.

Every year, there are certain patterns in film and TV that arise from marketing, cultural trends or simple financial success. Naturally, the Internet has become better and better at pointing these out, often through supercuts and video edits. Though we’re only a few weeks into 2017, there are plenty of these patterns to be sussed out, even if they’re only from movie trailers.

The YouTube account CinemaRaven has posted a video that compiles clips from 2017 movie trailers that feature the same sound effect: “a descending low digital drop,” in his words. Though some of the “drops” vary, many are exactly the same and all attempt to build tension (in an utterly contrived fashion) in order to best sell tickets for Hollywood’s big-budget films. Watch the video below.
The video features plenty of trailers for upcoming films. »

Fans have been eagerly anticipating a new look at James Mangold's Logan for quite a while, and that excitement was only heightened after the first 40 minutes of the movie screened to such a postive response recently. We had heard that the final trailer for the March release would be with us at some point this month, but now thanks to Trailer Track (who cite official confirmation from Fox Taiwan), we know it'll be online this Thursday, most likely around 6am Pt/9am Et/2pm UK time. Plus, it sounds like we'll also be getting a new trailer for Scarlett Johansson's live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell later on that same day. Logan is set to hit theaters on March 3, but it'll have its world premiere next month at the Berlin International Film Festival. Ghost in the Shell will arrive on March 31. »

Scarlett Johansson has tough advice for anyone wanting to stay in great shape.
"It's a lot of hard work and discipline, as I'm sure you know," Johansson told Et's Cameron Mathison while promoting her upcoming film, Ghost in the Shell. "It's a lifestyle that starts at the gym in the morning and then I fight my way through the day."
Johansson's flawless figure is put on full display in Ghost in the Shell, in which she plays a special ops, one-of-a-kind cyborg hybrid who leads a taskforce in taking down a nefarious computer hacker.
The 32-year-old actress spends most of the film in a skin-tight latex unitard -- a far cry from the bulky suits worn by Johansson’s male Marvel co-stars, who play heroes like Iron Man and Captain America.
"I'm watching it thinking about all these male superheroes that get »
Scarlett Johansson isn't letting the haters get her down!
Et recently caught up with the 32-year-old actress, where she got candid about receiving criticism for her casting in director Rupert Sanders' latest live-action adaptation, Ghost in the Shell, out March 31.
"I'm skeptical of the casting myself," Johansson, who portrays a typically Japanese manga character known as the Major in the film, joked to Et's Cameron Mathison. "No! I hope that fans go on this journey of self-discovery with this character and are taken away to this world, a world Rupert so painstakingly created for them."
"You know, there's a lot of great, kind of references -- visual references -- for the fans that hopefully will have them standing and cheering," she continued. "Fingers crossed, we'll see."
Johansson admitted, however, that she has yet to see the final version of the film »

Scarlett Johansson is a woman of many talents.
It's no surprise that the 32-year-old actress has singing chops -- and though she doesn't often show them off publicly, she does go into "jukebox" mode at home with her daughter!
"I sing a lot, all day, probably much to her annoyance," Johansson told Et's Cameron Mathison on Monday, opening up about life with her 2-year-old, Rose Dorothy. "Sometimes it's songs she doesn't want to hear, so she'll just go, 'No, no, no! Not that one.' I'm like a jukebox, just press 'skip.' Next!"
The Ghost in the Shell star gushed over bonding with her baby through music, revealing that the pair even sometimes duet on Frozen's "Let It Go."
"She's got a good ear!" Johansson said. "She sings along with me."
