Nikki Heat
Castle's doubts about method actress Natalie Rhodes playing the title lead in the movie version of his Niki Heat novel "Heat Wave" are laughed away by Becket, which changes after the star joins the team to observe and spookily-well imitates Becket's every way and even her ridiculously expensive taste come in handy. The team's current case is the murder of match-maker Stacy, in whose home a fortune in cash is found, so on top of theatrically dumped ex Brad Williams, her recent clients, their targets and her P.I. Duke Jones, must pass muster.

When the owner of historic Drake's Magic Shop in New York is found drowned in Houdini's famous water torture tank, Castle and Beckett must delve into the world of magic, magicians and their secrets to find his killer. As part of their investigation, Castle & Beckett meet master magician Tobias Strange. Meanwhile, the magicians aren't the only ones keeping secrets, as a new romantic relationship is revealed for Esposito and Lanie.

Lucky Stiff
Lottery-multimillionaire Jay Hixton is shot in the heart at home around midnight. He was apparently forced to open his safe. It contained a gun even butler Reginald Easley didn't know about, which was laid besides him, and a bag, which was taken, containing $100,000 cash and a blue dye bomb, which exploded in a maintenance worker's face. Various suspects arise from Hixton's bizarre generosity, his own murky past and his family, an ex and junkie daughter, and even his winning lottery ticket a year ago.

The Final Nail
Castle's boarding school mentor and protector to aspire writing, Damian Westlake, is the obvious suspect when his rich wife is killed in their mansion. Castle gets temporarily sidetracked when Becket feels their friendship clouds Castle's judgment. She must admit after examining the infidelity and financial context that debt-ridden Damian may well be innocent. Castle however is forced to attempt proving he didn't kill father Westlake, whose suspicious fatal robbery was never cleared.

Setup
Recently US-nationalized Syrian cab driver Amir Alhabi, who runs his own company with cousin Fariq Yusef, is shot in his cab after a 45 tour back to the start point with consulate 'security attaché' (spy) Fariq Yusef. Homeland Security Agent Mark Fallon takes charge after his keys lead to a storage unit with cobalt radiation feared to stem from a nuclear weapon. Castle is officially discarded but keeps in the loop, tracing a payment to Amir, which he believes a fake as cover-up, shifting focus to employed cab driver Kevin McCann.

Museum director Hayes is murdered at a special exhibition from which the diamonds-covered, $50,000,000 show-stopper 'Fist of capitalism' is missing. Suspects include the owners, the haughty McHugh couple, discretely fighting over a divorce, insurance investigator Serena Kaye, presumably a never caught 'former' master thief, and Falco, a British master thief presumably hired by Hayes, who was in dire debt. Serena is key to some dirty tricks.

National TV ghost-buster Jack Sinclair is killed on camera while investigating the famous New York McClellan house, site of 8 previous 'suspicious' murders. His cameraman Barry Bavetta resigned after a fight that day but has an alibi. Beckett and Esposito being skeptics, Castle mainly teams up with Ryan. The root of Sinclair's fear for the house and its very architecture prove key to discovering both another older murder and a list of present suspects, enabling to set a fitting trap.

Cops & Robbers
Accompanying Martha to the bank, where she pigheadedly refuses his financial help, Castle's speculations over the phone with Becket that surgical mask-equipped customers may be robbers proves correct when everyone is held at gun-point. The call makes Becket the inexperienced hostage negotiator. Castle works out and manages to communicate both crucial and puzzling information. The hostage-chapter ends spectacularly abruptly, only to launch a very different hunt for the brain, who wasn't after cash at all.

Shortly after killing a kindergarten teacher about to marry, a sniper kills a lawyer on a Manhattan street, without an apparent link. Esposito's sharp-shooter training proves handy for the case and to help Becket deal with the rekindled trauma of her near-fatal shooting. With help from his daughter's art course, Castle works out the only clues left at the distant sniper hideouts, cuttings from Renaissance paintings. Each alludes to the next murder site. After a third target survives, Castle works out a superficial point in common and postulates a tragic motive.

When Castle and Beckett wake up in bed, handcuffed together, in a locked room with no memory of how they got there, they must piece together the mystery of where they are and why, all while trying to escape. But as the two of them adjust to being shackled together, what's the biggest threat they face... the people who abducted them or each other?
