Murder mystery author Richard 'Rick' Castle publishes the book in which he kills off his bestseller series' hero, Derek Storm. On that very day, NYPD detective Kate Beckett questions him about two murders in the exact style of his novels, on a lawyer Fisk viz. social worker Alyson Tisdale. He's professionally flattered to have a copycat. Her boss, captain Roy Montgomery, accepts his help as case consultant and teams them up, the mayor being a fan puts him de facto in charge. More copy killing follows. The police simplistically arrest his fan Kyle Cabot, the first common link. Castle and his author friends decide he must keep investigating, on the assumption it's a motive cover-up, which he does brilliantly, as even Beckett must grudgingly admit.

Now Castle has solved the pseudo copycat-case, the mayor orders him accepted as permanent police consultant. First case, Howard Peterson and Sara Peterson's nanny Sara Manning, from Georgia, was found dead in their building's clothes dryer. Once more, Castle comes up with the non-evident questions and ideas to establish the infidelity-related motive and several suspects.

Insurance agent John Allen was strangled and thrown off a roof into a tree. Masked men hold Castle and the coroner at gun-point to steal the corpse on the way to the morgue, then dump it after butchering the inside, probably retrieving drugs. The widow refused to consider infidelity and pointed at former colleague Max Haverstock but it turns out both were fired eight months before and only Max got another legal job. Meanwhile only the mayor and the chief stand between Castle and jealous Becket severing his privileged ties with the NYPD after this 'last case', so he takes risks to 'redeem' himself after the trail leads to Chinatown poker and Russian mobsters.

The robbery victims include Fred Cana, collector for untouchable crime king Victor Racine, who is believed to have killed Javier's previous partner Isaac 'Ike' Thornton and managed to make him seem corrupt so the team was broken up. IA Lt. Stan Holliwell gets involved after Ike's fingerprints are found on Finch's corpse.

Castle's boarding school mentor and protector to aspire writing, Damian Westlake, is the obvious suspect when his rich wife is killed in their mansion. Castle gets temporarily sidetracked when Becket feels their friendship clouds Castle's judgment. She must admit after examining the infidelity and financial context that debt-ridden Damian may well be innocent. Castle however is forced to attempt proving he didn't kill father Westlake, whose suspicious fatal robbery was never cleared.

Wardell claims to be framed too. The cyanide came not from the court house vending machine coffee but was released from a capsule. The plot thickens further, especially with two malversations within Justice.

Then a corpse is found in the pizzeria oven, crisped, but killed by previous stabbing. The owner accuses his rivals, but no one is innocent and everyone has a dirty secret. And the victim, a former war correspondent who lost his edge after his daughter died in a car accident, was reporting on them about their "pizza wars." However, he'd also stumbled across the identity of 'urban myth' Cavallo, a drug lord who viciously executes rivals.

The captain takes her off the case but she uses extant leave. Castle comes along, having to visit his book's movie set anyway. Informally backed up by Ryan and Esposito, they soon find Royce must have been after the manufacturer of the dissolving type of bullet he was killed with. The trail of arms-dealings and new crimes leads back to New York, fortunately as LAPD detective Kyle Seeger, who follows, wants them out as much as Montgomery ordered Becket back.

Beckett, his likely next target, receives warnings from her father, Montgomery and Castle. Much helped by Ryan and Esposito, the duo work out that there must be a police accomplice and/or mastermind controlling Chuck Ryker, the debt-ridden corrupt jailer who was found murdered at his home.

Yet when she returns to work after therapy, Ryan and Esposito tell Castle help them keep the case of her mothers killers going, behind ex-IA by-the-book-Captain Victoria Gates's back. They work out the only remaining angle are bank files lost in a fire, according to decorated officer Rod Halstead definitely no arson. Becket grudgingly passes her gun exam, but can't perform in real danger anymore in their assigned case, the ingeniously staged murder of a rock band member's girlfriend. The boys find Becket is the next, last logical target, and are surprisingly offered safety for all if the case is laid to rest, but things turn out differently.

Actually, several people prance around New York in Lone Vengeance suits. The team investigates them and Tyler's enemies, such as his former employer Tony 'The Butcher' Valtini, thus proving new captain Victoria Gates's lack of confidence in them is unwarranted.

Suspects include the owners, the haughty McHugh couple, discretely fighting over a divorce, insurance investigator Serena Kaye, presumably a never caught 'former' master thief, and Falco, a British master thief presumably hired by Hayes, who was in dire debt. Serena is key to some dirty tricks.

National TV ghost-buster Jack Sinclair is killed on camera while investigating the famous New York McClellan house, site of 8 previous 'suspicious' murders. His cameraman Barry Bavetta resigned after a fight that day but has an alibi. Beckett and Esposito being skeptics, Castle mainly teams up with Ryan. The root of Sinclair's fear for the house and its very architecture prove key to discovering both another older murder and a list of present suspects, enabling to set a fitting trap.

Atlantic City (New Jersey) hotel-casino co-owner Sam Seigel's corpse is found in an abandoned New York warehouse. Captain Victoria Gates keeps Becket in the office to test her skills 'without Castle's help'. The boys appreciate female absence as Ryan owes them a bachelor's party, but Javier's logical place as best man was already taken by the bride's teenage brother. Marino's partner Charlie Turner and his security expert Daniel Sullivan cooperative until the team gets close, linking the murder to the mob and employee Nadine Espinoza's disappearance. Turner throws the trio out, without recourse as it's outside NYPD jurisdiction, but Castles sneaks back in as Elvis impersonators.

Shortly after killing a kindergarten teacher about to marry, a sniper kills a lawyer on a Manhattan street, without an apparent link. Esposito's sharp-shooter training proves handy for the case and to help Becket deal with the rekindled trauma of her near-fatal shooting. With help from his daughter's art course, Castle works out the only clues left at the distant sniper hideouts, cuttings from Renaissance paintings. Each alludes to the next murder site. After a third target survives, Castle works out a superficial point in common and postulates a tragic motive.

Castle not only repeatedly appeals to his former team, but actually turns to them when he disagrees with Slaughter's theory as well as his bully blackmail method.

The murder of a Latino army veteran ex-con, ex-Lobos-street gang member quickly links to a break-in in the late captain's home, to steal only and all his old police files, and yields the fingerprints of the sniper who nearly killed Becket. Castle realizes continuing the investigation will draw him back and probably cost her life by squashing his deal with deep throat. Her refusal to back down causes a break up with Castle, and Gates suspends both her and Esposito for continuing an unauthorized investigation in a case assigned to another NYPD team. Now Becket commits romantically.

Ryan discovers Castle and Beckett's secret relationship while questioning a suspect, who lets slip that he was questioned by "the writer and his girlfriend". Ryan immediately catches on, and his suspicions are confirmed when the suspect tells Ryan that Castle's girlfriend's name was "Kate".

Castle, who has better taste, is amused to find Becket was part of a college fan gang. The team works out various personal, career and business motives as well as opportunities for cast and crew.

A rock band finally reaches fame, but one of its members, James Swan is found murdered in his trailer. Due to the inevitably high media profile, the city orders full cooperation with a TV crew which was already filming the band in reality-style. That makes Javier show off, Kate camera shy, while Castle pulls the strings, almost like a director. The team finds conflicts within the band. Roadie Hank Rodgers also proves a link to John Campbell, from whose abusive cult Swan escaped and whom he recently met and paid a small fortune cash.

He's ultimately identified as former business shark Edmund, who chose 6 years ago to become one of Dave Dunne's professionally trained Santas and ended his marriage. He also helped poor residents fight their eviction by a big company. It turns out he used illegal means, but was far from the only crook in the story, not even counting his murderer. Meanwhile Castle's family and fellow detectives wrestle with holiday planning.

A photographer first seen with the body was hired by her, against his will, for a 'life or death matter'. Her own handsome, elusive boyfriend Corey Francis turns out to be a fake identity of intelligence veteran Noah Kesswood. She lost her last case, being absorbed by a private investigation for golf pro Billy Piper, widely suspected having arranged his wife's yacht drowning, but that case lead to a drug connection. Meanwhile Alexis's mother suddenly moves in to nurse her kissing disease, generally believed to be dynamite for Castle's relationship with Kate, who also stays at his place and won't budge.

FBI agent Harris's sole trace, obtained only because Becket 'turned away' from Castle slightly torturing the wounded van driver, runs dead. Meanwhile the girls attempt an escape, but discover the container they were held in now stands in Paris.

Her ex has a solid alibi and couldn't make sense of her panic about 'it'. Tracing the DVD's shipping leads to another copy recipient, killed at home similarly. Their only link is having been jurors on executed country serial killer Nigel Malloy
