So That’s What Mike Myers Has Been Doing: Writing an Austin Powers Stage Musical

13 December 2011 10:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

There haven't been any real updates on that fourth Austin Powers film since we heard over the summer that Mike Myers and New Line were still ironing out the details [2], but it seems you'll be seeing more of the International Man of Mystery in one form or another. Myers is now set to write the story for a stage musical based on the character, with Tony Award-winning The Book of Mormon co-director Casey Nicholaw in talks to direct. The new play will serve as a prequel to the movies, and will not star Myers. More details after the jump. According to sources who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter [3], the Austin Powers musical "will be set in 1960s London and detail how Powers first acquired his mighty mojo." Colin Callender and Sonia Friedman will produce the play, which will feature the music of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello. Myers is reportedly »

While there's still some question as to whether or not an Austin Powers 4 will ultimately get made, groovy pastiche originator Mike Myers is meanwhile turning his attention to the musical stage. According to THR, Casey Nicholaw - director of the hit musical "The Book of Mormon" from South Park guys Matt Stone and Trey Parker - is currently in talks to direct an "Austin Powers" musical to be written by Mike Myers and that will act as a prequel to the three existing »

Canuck comedian Mike Myers closed the door on his tenure as the lovable green ogre in the Shrek franchise with the recent Shrek Forever After being billed as the last film. Myers quickly dusted off another popular character, the swinging sixties British spy Austin Powers. Page Six reported today that Myers made a commitment to develop and write a Broadway musical based on the first Austin Powers movie. It was Myers’ second shot at reviving Austin Powers in the last six months. Last summer, Myers announced plans to partner with director Jay Roach on Austin Powers 4, a return to the big screen as the bumbling spy for the first time in nine years, since his '70s-set action comedy Austin Powers in Goldmember co-starring Beyoncé Knowles. »

"Austin Powers"' Random Task suspected of murder

12 October 2011 9:16 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Who could forget "Austin Powers?" Such a great movie. I always loved the ending too, where Dr. Evil's henchman, Random Task, surprises super-spy Austin Powers and his new wife Vanessa in their honeymoon suite for one last big fight. Here is that scene:

Random Task was played by Joe Son, a South Korean actor, wrestler, and mixed martial artist. But if he looks like a bad dude in the movie, that's nothing compared to what he's been up to off screen. Back in September, Son was convicted of one felony count of torture and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the rape and kidnapping of a young woman on Christmas Eve in 1990. If you'd like to be incapable of ever watching "Austin Powers" again without feeling icky and uncomfortable, you can read the official Orange County press release about Son's conviction, which lays out his crimes in repulsive detail. »

In the Works: Austin Powers 4, One Shot's Leading Lady, Apes Trilogy, Patti Smith's Just Kids

15 August 2011 10:34 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

News of several new projects broke over the weekend. The question is, from Austin Powers 4 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequels to One Shot and Just Kids, which projects do we actually want to see? - Austin Powers fans, the wait is over. The fourth installment of the stagadelic franchise is happening, complete with star Mike Myers. This is career-reviving news for Myers, whose only notable live-action work since 2002's Goldmember was a too-brief role as General Ed Fenech in Inglorious Basterds. Voicing the Shrek franchise has no doubt kept the dollars coming, but Austin Powers 4 will reunite a face (and a British accent) back to his voice. Austin Powers is not everyone's cup of tea, but the first three »

Mike Myers not yet confirmed for Austin Powers 4?

15 August 2011 9:23 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Contrary to previous reports, it would appear that Mike Myers hasn’t officially signed on for Austin Powers 4 just yet. Following earlier news that Austin Powers 4 was definitely in the pipeline, Deadline are reporting that the recent news has come as something of a surprise for a skeptical New Line. Myers has apparently only just responded to an Austin Powers offer that the company made to him almost a year ago, but so far he has only expressed interest and negotiations are still underway. In 2008, it was proposed that Austin 4 would...

Other than a small role in Inglourious Basterds and completing his vocal duties for the Shrek franchise Mike Myers hasn’t been on-screen a whole lot over recent years. The Love Guru may have had something to do with that after it bombed in 2008, proving audiences are only interested in wacky Myers characters if they’re [...]
