'The Emperor's New Clothes' with animals
6 July 2016 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

'Timeless Tales from Hallmark' is a wonderful show, adapting well-loved stories and while not completely faithful it treats them with respect and tells the stories with plenty of heart and charm without over-complicating or dumbing them down.

"The Emperor's New Clothes" is not one of my favourites of 'Timeless Tales from Hallmark', it does fare favourably among other adaptations of the story, with Burbank Animation Studio's animated version being decent and Cannon Movie Tales' live-action version being the nadir of Cannon's adaptations of fairy-tales.

Admittedly, the original story is not one of my favourites, there are other fairy-tales this reviewer finds more involving with more memorable characters and charm and adaptations of the story always face the problem of not feeling too thin or too stretched. Despite being with animals, this is a respectable version, not the most faithful adaptations of 'Timeless Tales from Hallmark but the spirit and basic structure is there. And mostly the animals fit the roles of the characters well, apart from the trickster tailors portrayed as rats being too like sinister villains.

With the animation, as always with the 'Timeless Tales from Hallmark', There's plenty of vibrant colour, the backgrounds have a great amount of detail and it's smoothly drawn. The incidental music is very well done, but this reviewer was less keen on the rather forgettable songs, the lion emperor's song being by far the best of the lot.

Scripting is nicely written, with some funny moments. The book-end live action scenes are beautifully done, with Olivia Newton being a sincere host. The voice acting is strong enough across the board, Dom DeLuise being the biggest name and he offers the most enthusiasm.

Overall, there are better episodes of 'Timeless Tales from Hallmark', but "The Emperor's New Clothes" is very much watchable. 8/10 Bethany Cox
