Check Out Judge Dredd’s Helmet!

15 December 2010 2:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

We are gradually getting a few snapshots from the new version of Judge Dredd, with Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, Doom, The Bourne Supremacy, Red) as Dredd and Pete Travis (Vantage Point, Endgame) on direction duties. It’s not been too easy so far to see exactly what the look of the film is going to be, with these shots of Mega City One clearly awaiting a bit of CGI/matte-work augmentation and these shots of vehicles seeming a little unlike the finished article.

We have already been shown what Urban is going to look like in his Dredd get-up, although the image was a little fuzzy. Now we have something a good deal clearer from Edmund Woodward, who is working on the film, showing not only what Dredd’s helmet should look like, but also some of the preliminary sculpting work.

Have a good look at these snaps »

Banksy film wins prize

Street artist scoops most entertaining documentary prize at Grierson Trust British Documentary Awards

Street artist Banksy has won the most entertaining documentary prize at this year's Grierson Trust British Documentary Awards.

As usual, he did not appear in person to collect the award for Exit Through the Gift Shop– an amusing faux documentacoops prizery – but sent a message to the audience at the ceremony in London tonight.

Jury chairman Emma Hindley said: "The winner was a unanimous decision. It's a flawlessly made film; original and insightful, it asks questions rather than telling you what to think and at the same time, manages to be very, very funny."

The best documentary series went to Patrick Forbes for Channel 4's insight into Hampshire Constabulary in The Force, while Julian Temple's look at industrial and economic decline of America's Motor City in Requiem for Detroit for BBC2 won best historical documentary.

Thirlby Tags Along With 'Judge Dredd'

3 September 2010 10:09 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Olivia Thirlby is one of those people who's been making the smart kind of choices in her career ever since she appeared in Jason Reitman's "Juno". She's appeared in what I think is the best short segment of "New York, I Love You" and is appearing in "Margaret" and "The Darkest Hour". It's looking pretty good for the actress, especially since she's going to be part of the upcoming "Judge Dredd" as the telepathic rookie. She's co-starring alongside Karl Urban in the futuristic action film that's to be directed by Pete Travis. If you aren't familiar with Travis' work, he's previously handled "Vantage Point" and "Endgame". Dredd is an American law enforcement officer in a violent city of the future where uniformed Judges combine the powers of police, judge, jury and executioner. Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot. »

In Case You Missed It: The Stirring Lesson Of "Endgame"

2 September 2010 10:04 PM, PDT | Screen Comment | See recent Screen Comment news »

By SAÏDEH Pakravan - September 3, 2010

As today Middle East peace talks (does one dare still call it that?) start once more in Washington, no doubt to quickly get mired in the usual sands of recrimination and rigidity of all participants, one could do worse than watch the sober and remarkably thrilling 2009 “Endgame” by Pete Travis about the secret negotiations that led to the release of Nelson Mandela, the legitimization of the Anc, and the end of apartheid.

This rare miraculous episode in contemporary human history is still one at which we shake our heads in disbelief and wonder. Knowing how it came to pass is an inspiration. In the 1980s, Thabo Mbeki (Chiwetel Ejiofor) for the Anc and Willie Esterhuyze (William Hurt) for the South African government, along with their small delegations, sat together time after time in an English countryside stately home to attempt to talk. Reliance Big Pictures and Im Global, a Reliance international sales company, will finance DNA’s 3D production of "Judge Dredd", a $45 million live-action, film adaptation of the 2000 Ad comic-book character created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra.

"Judge Dredd" is being made by the writer/producer partnership behind "The Beach", "28 Days Later", "28 Weeks Later", and "Sunshine", with actor Karl Urban confirmed for the leading role by producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich.

“The main thing about 'Dredd' is that it’s a fantastic comic," said Macdonald.

"Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of 'Dredd' in 'Megacity', so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real."

Screenplay is by Alex Garland, for Pete Travis, director of "Omagh", "Vantage Point" and "Endgame".

Karl Urban is the law. The 38-year-old New Zealander will play the new Judge Dredd on the big screen.

In May, the project from London-based DNA Films was officially announced at Cannes, with Reliance Big Pictures and Im Global providing a $45million budget and Pete Travis (Endgame) in the director's chair.

Urban, who played Dr Leonard 'Bones' McCoy in 2009's Star Trek movie, has now confirmed rumours that he has been cast as the futuristic law-enforcer.

He told Collider: "Well, it's in its very, very early days, but I feel pretty safe to say 'Yes. I am the law.'

"I've met with [director] Pete Travis, [producer] Andrew McDonald and we've had a really wonderful meeting of the minds. They have offered me the role and we're in the process of making that happen.

Judge Dredd writer joins Logan's Run

Alex Garland is to pen the screenplay for Warner Bros' planned new adaptation of Logan's Run.

HeatVision reports that Garland is in negotiations for the project, which would be the feature film directing debut for Carl Rinsch.

Rinsch is also planning to direct a remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon and was among the contenders to take on X-Men: First Class.

Garland previously wrote Danny Boyle's films 28 Days Later and Sunshine as well as the script for the new Judge Dredd film to be directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point, Endgame).

A previous Logan's Run movie in 1976 starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett, and led to a TV series.

Based on a 1967 novel, the story is set in a future society where citizens are killed at a designated age (21 in the novel, 30 in the first film and TV show) to control population.

Splice director Vincenzo Natali sets sights on Alpha Flight

Will it be third time lucky for filmmaker Vincenzo Natali in the superhero movie stakes?

We'll next see the director's work on screen when his genetic creature feature Splice, starring Adrien Brody, is released in June. A new poster for the film is included here.

After that he will helm an adaptation of William Gibson's seminal cyberspace novel Neuromancer.

But Natali is also keen to take on a comic book adaptation.

He previously expressed an interest in doing a big-screen version of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing comic book series but then found out it was bogged down in rights issues.

He told MTV: "Unfortunately, there is no Swamp Thing movie in the works right now because of all the legal entanglements involved with that particular property. I'm told it won't happen any time soon."

Judge Dredd Set to Begin Filming at the End of the Year; Will Be in 3D

13 May 2010 2:22 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Hoping to wipe away the memories of the campy-at-best Judge Dredd from 1995 starring Sylvester Stallone, a new adaptation of the 2000 Ad comic-book character is on the way.  We first reported on the new version back in December 2008 and in September of last year, we heard that writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later) had turned in a “great” script, which Pete Travis (Vantage Point) will direct.  For those who aren’t familiar with the property, it revolves around a group of enforcers known as “Judges” who serve as police, judge, jury and executioner. Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot.  It’s brutal, but think of the savings to taxpayers! (Obviously, I’m being sarcastic, but the comic actually feature a good deal of ironic humor.)

Today, we’ve received a press release informing us that the new film is budgeted at $45 million, »
