Anna Brady (Amy Adams), an apartment stager from Boston, plans to fly to Dublin to propose marriage to her cardiologist boyfriend, Dr Jeremy Sloane (Adam Scott) on leap day. Unfortunately, her plane is forced to land in Cardiff, Wales due to inclement weather. With the ferry to Cork also cancelled, she hires a boat but makes it only to Dingle where she hires surly innkeeper Declan O'Callaghan (Matthew Goode) to take her to Dublin.

Leap Year is based on a screenplay written by American screenwriters Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan.

A leap year is a year in which there are 366 days, instead of the usual 365. The extra day occurs on 29 February and reappears every four years, always in years that are evenly divisible by 4. The last leap year was in 2016 (4 × 504) and will occur again in 2020 (4 × 505). The reason an extra day is added to the calendar every four years is because the astronomical year is not a perfect 365 days; it actually takes approximately but more accurately 365.25 days. Thus, adding an extra day every four years keeps the calendar from drifting.

Dingle, Ireland is located in County Kerry on the Atlantic coast (west). Dublin, the capital city of Ireland, is located in County Dublin on the east coast of Ireland. A map of Ireland, showing Dingle and Dublin can be seen here.

A ham sandwich. When said with an Irish accent, "ham" comes out sounding more like "hang".

Technically, there is no canonical or official list of 10 Wonders in Ireland. Lists of Wonders abound and differ depending upon the travel agency or individual traveler devising the list. Some of the more prominent sites appearing on most lists include: the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim, The Burren in County Clare, the Bog of Allen in central Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, the Skellig Islands in County Kerry, Br na Binne in County Meath, Connemara National Park in County Galway, Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, McGillicuddy Reeks, a mountain range in County Kerry, and the Book of Kells in Trinity College Library in Dublin.

Ballycarbery Castle, as shown near the train station in CountyTipperary, does not exist. It was computer enhanced for the movie. The real Ballycarbery Castle is much smaller and found in County Kerry. For more information about computer enhanced scenes in this movie, see here.

It's a French dish known as coq au vin (literally "rooster in wine"). It's prepared from chicken and vegetables with the addition of wine. Numerous recipes for coq au vin can be found on the Internet.

The bride challenged the groom to never steal, lie or cheat. "But if you must steal," she says, "then steal away my sorrows. And if you must lie, lie with me all the nights of my life. And if you must cheat, then please cheat death...because I couldn't live without you."

After seeing Anna to Dublin, Declan returns to Dingle, and Anna returns to Boston with Jeremy. Declan holds a big Save the Caragh Pub party and makes enough money to prevent foreclosure. Anna and Jeremy move into their dream apartment at the Davenport. During their housewarming party, Jeremy admits to Anna that the reason he asked her to marry him was because the apartment selection committee required them to be married. When a fire alarm suddenly goes off and Jeremy rushes around saving his electronic equipment, Anna sees his true side and flies back to Ireland. She returns to the Caragh and asks Declan if he would consider "not making plans" with her. Declan leaves her standing, and Anna takes that as an Irish no. They meet again on the cliffs where Declan explains that the reason he left her standing was to get his mother's claddagh ring in order to propose marriage to her. In the final scene, they are touring the country as newlyweds in Declan's classic Renault 4.

A claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring that features two hands clasping a heart surmounted by a crown. It is often given as a token of love.
