Various members of the cast and crew have admitted to receiving government-level "push back" to the film, both during filming and in post-production.
Jeremy Renner was initially in talks to star as political whistle-blower, Julian Assange in 2013's The Fifth Estate. Renner ultimately declined the part and moved forward with Kill the Messenger instead.
