Katie learns what Storm has done for her in today's tearjerker
1 May 2008 | by See all my reviews

The last few episodes have been tearjerkers. Two episodes ago, Storm shot himself in order to give his sister Katie his heart. In the last episode, the surgeons successfully transplanted Storm's heart in Katie. In this episode, Katie learns what Storm had done for her. Everyone has been in tears. Katherine Kelly Lang (Katie's sister, Brooke), in particular, is a pitiable weeper.

The likelihood of Storm's heart tearing through the legalities and making it to Katie is probably slim. But in a soap opera, the theme of self-sacrifice, and the symbolism of having a brother's heart pumping in his sister's body, is more important than realism. But we do get a gory operation scene and a load of details about hospital procedures. Soap operas don't shun realism; they only look away from it occasionally.

Stephanie (Susan Flannery, the show's matriarch) is on hand to deliver a few unsentimental remarks. She tells Eric that Katie is going to resent what Storm had done for her. The feelings of guilt, she says, will be unbearable. She may be right.
