Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk
8 November 2014 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

A great tower dominates the Kingdom of Uruk; inside it dwell monsters, the worst of which is Druaga. It is eighty years since Druaga was last defeated by King Gingamesh and people are preparing to enter the tower once more. Once such adventurer is Jil; he is determined to become a hero despite his brother refusing to let him be part of his group. Forming his own group our hero and his new comrades enter the tower; here they will have to confront monsters, rivals and even some they believe are friends before they can finally confront Druaga.

This, the first season of 'Tower of Druaga' is an enjoyably adventure. We are quickly introduced to the main group of likable characters then they are thrown into the action. The fact that they are going through levels of the tower means that each episode can have a fairly self-contained element as well as being part of the ongoing plot. As they proceed the danger increases to such an extent that not everybody will make it… and that includes major characters as well as nameless soldiers and antagonists.

The characters are well designed and fairly distinctive. Gil is a good if slightly cliché protagonist however it is the supporting cast that is the most likable; especially Melt, a mage, and his young assistant, a girl named Coopa; also in the group are Kaaya, an oracle, and Ahmey a spear-wielding warrior-woman. As the story goes on we learn more about them and their characters develop, sometimes in ways one wouldn't expect.

The animation looks great for the most part with fairly detailed backgrounds and fluid movement; the only weak point is the occasional 3D CGI which stands out against the rest of the animation, this is most noticeable in the final fight against Druaga. The story nicely combines drama and humour and there is little to offend so the series is suitable for children. Overall a fun series; remember to watch 'The Sword of Ukuk' afterwards as that concludes the story.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
