My All-Time Favorite Anime!
22 April 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Soul Eater is an anime that gets better every time I watch it. I believe this is actually the best anime series ever made period.

The premise is Death Weapon Meister Academy, more known as the DWMA, standing against the forces of evil, which would plunge the world into chaos and drag humanity into the very depths of fear and madness. The demons are known as Kishin, and their eternal hunger for destruction. To ensure that the Kishin never regain their hold on this world, this academy was founded by the Grim Reaper, Death himself. So it's not exactly a typical school. The DWMA trains each weapon and meister team to also combat against witches, who also threaten the peace of the world. Many students are motivated into fighting against witches and evil humans who are on the verge of becoming Kishin with their main goal: making or becoming a Death Scythe. When a Demon Weapon has consumed a certain amount of souls in order, 99 evil human souls and 1 witch soul, they gain extraordinary power and can be used by Lord Death himself. So that's the basic premise. However, the writers have managed to construct a more complex story around that premise and focus on their characters.

The anime and manga focuses on three teams of weapons and meisters as they kick ass and take souls. The first team is the book smart Maka Albarn and the cool, laid-back Soul "Eater" Evans. Those two are my favorite characters. The two bicker, usually as a result of different views on things or contrasting personality characteristics. Interestingly, when these fights happen, it is usually a result of one caring for the other. I do believe there is more to it between them then just being friends. And yes, I do ship the hell out of this couple. The reason why is because as the series progresses, their bond grows stronger and they deliver the most emotional and dramatic scenes in the series. The next team is the arrogant Black Star and the calm Tsubaki Nakatsukasa. Black Star is an obvious parody of Naruto. He's supposed to be loud, boastful, and annoying so he delivers great comedy. His main goal in the series is to surpass the gods. I love this guy's energy and determination. Tsubaki is the polar opposite of Black Star. She shows signs in which she is disheartened by his actions, but she manages to put up with it. The third team is the son of the Grim Reaper, Death The Kid and his partners, Liz and Patty Thompson. They deliver great comedy as well. Kid suffers from OCD and is obsessed with symmetry and perfection. Kid picked the Thompson sisters as his weapons, twin pistols, in order to preserve symmetry. While the sisters admire his dignified soul and Kid admires their positive souls, Liz gets angry and Patty laughs when Kid is thrown into one of his fits of symmetry depression, though they don't hesitate to comfort him. Kid's relationship with his father is also believable. While Kid is serious and reserved, his father is not, unless the situation calls for it. Lord Death cares very deeply for his son, as a good parent should, and encourages his son and his partners to succeed. Each character basically start off as parodies but as the series progresses, they start to grow into more mature characters and care for each other. I love that use of character development. I wish I can tell you more about the other characters in the series but I don't want to spoil it.

The anime runs for 51 episodes. The manga runs longer when it comes to the story. The reason being is that the anime ran weekly while the manga runs monthly so the writers had to alter the story of the anime in order to make a great ending and they reached that goal superbly. The ending in the manga, on the other hand, could have been good but the way they execute it by mentioning about women's breasts throughout most of it and Excalibur ruining a serious moment for Kid made it underwhelming. If you ask me, I like the anime's ending a lot better.

The voice cast includes Micah Solusod (Soul), Laura Bailey (Maka), Brittney Karbowski (Black Star), Monica Rial (Tsubaki), Todd Haberkorn (Kid), Cherami Leigh (Patty), Jamie Marchi (Liz), Vic Mignogna (Spirit), and Chuck Huber (Dr. Stein). They are perfect voicing their character roles. I do have one nitpick and that's with the voice actress playing Black Star. While Brittney Karbowski brings enthusiasm into the character, you can tell that is a woman doing his voice. But hey, it's common for other shows so I'll let it pass.

I love the animation. The fight scenes are well done, the character movements and environments flow very well, the backgrounds, especially Death City, are designed beautifully, and the imagery and atmosphere is awesome with the action, scary with the designs of the monsters and specific locations, and silly with the hilarious moments!

I also love the music. There are tunes that fit very well in the action scenes and some that fit well with the dramatic and dark moments. I even enjoy listening to the opening and closing theme songs. By the time they begin, I will have them stuck in my head forever!

Overall, Soul Eater kicks ass! It's action-packed, well-paced, hilarious, dark, and it has tons of heart. The animation is awesome, the soundtrack is amazing, and the characters are all memorable. It's not only my all-time favorite anime, it's one of my favorite shows period! So I recommend you watch this series if you haven't already! It is definitely worth your time! 10/10
