Simon Pegg interview: Man Up, Tintin 2, rom coms, directing

27 May 2015 8:33 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Pegg chats to us about rom coms, Man Up, writing, Tintin 2, visiting Andy Serkis on The Jungle Book set, directing, and more...

Before he heads off to make the next Star Trek film, Simon Pegg is back in UK cinemas this weekend for the really rather good romantic comedy, Man Up. He co-stars with Lake Bell in the movie, and ahead of its release, he spared us some time to chat about the film, and what he's up to next...

It's an interesting sign of the times that BBC Films, which started out making movies that couldn't be made really, back with Truly Madly Deeply....

Another South Bank movie!

True. Back then, BBC Films was making niche films that were struggling to get made anywhere else. And here, with Man Up, a rom com seems to have become one of those niche films.

Absolutely, yeah. You make a very good point. »

New Photo from AMC’s Preacher Pilot Revealed by Seth Rogen

15 May 2015 7:04 AM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) and Arseface (Ian Colletti) are silhouetted in a new photo from the set of AMC's Preacher pilot, which is currently being directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Rogen recently Tweeted the image, which shows Jesse having what looks to be an intense conversation with fan favorite Arseface, aka Eugene Root, a young man who, in the comic books, was spurred on to attempt suicide after Kurt Cobain's death, only to survive a gunshot to the face.

Joining Rogen and Goldberg behind the camera is Bill Pope, who's worked as the director of photography on The Matrix films, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, Edgar Wright's The World's End, and much more. Rogen and Goldberg are directing from a screenplay they wrote with Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad).

Along with Cooper and Colletti, Preacher stars Joseph Gilgun as Irish vampire Cassidy, Ruth Negga as Tulip, W. Earl Brown as Sheriff Root, »

Exclusive: Edgar Wright Interviews 'Ex Machina" Director Alex Garland

8 May 2015 4:08 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

For film enthusiasts, there are few people working in the medium today more interesting than either Edgar Wright or Alex Garland.  So when the auteur of the Cornetto Trilogy told us he wanted a place to interview his friend, the director of the just-released "Ex Machina", we were thrilled to give him a home. You can hear the pair's conversation in the video above.  It's a fascinating, free-flowing discussion of filmmaking, the craft of the screenplay, technology, the themes in Garland's film as well as the surprising pick of the writer/director who has had an outsized influence on them both.  A stunning amount of the great film work of the past decade has emerged from the minds of the two participants in this conversation – "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz," "The World's End" and "Scott Pilgrim vs the World" are among Wright's credits. In his writer's garb, prior to »

Rosamund Pike Stars in 'Return to Sender' Thriller First Full Trailer

6 May 2015 3:27 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"You expect me to cry, scream, say 'dear God, why me?!' ...That's not me." The first trailer for Return to Sender has debuted, and we probably wouldn't be interested if it didn't star Rosamund Pike (of Gone Girl, The World's End, Jack Reacher). The plot is simple: A nurse living in small town goes on a blind date with a man who is not the person he says he is. Pike plays that "meticulous small-town nurse" and it looks like she's got some fun tricks up her sleeve, too. The cast includes Rumer Willis, Nick Nolte and Shiloh Fernandez. This doesn't look particularly impressive, but at least maybe the performances will be good. Here's the first official trailer for Fouad Mikati's Return to Sender, found on YouTube: From the original casting story on THR, the script is about "a meticulous small-town nurse (Pike) who falls victim to a »

Nick Frost on 'Unfinished Business' and What's Next for the Cornetto Crew (Exclusive)

6 March 2015 6:00 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Even diehard fans of Nick Frost will probably be taken aback by his performance in "Unfinished Business."

The British actor, best known for his trilogy of films with co-star Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz," and "The World's End"), has appeared as a comic-strip character in "The Adventures of Tin Tin," one of the seven dwarves in "Snow White and the Huntsman," and as a strung-out doper in cult sci-fi comedy "Attack the Block." But, in "Unfinished Business," the new comedy starring Vince Vaughn, Tom Wilkinson, and Dave Franco, Frost plays a buttoned-up businessman who has a rather outrageous personal life.

This means that, for most of the movie, he's outfitted in a snug leather ensemble and, at one point... well, I'm not going to spoil it for you. But, like I said, even for fans of the comedian, this is a whole new side of Nick Frost. »

'Star Trek 3': Pine Praises Pegg as the Perfect Writer

After writer-director Roberto Orci backed away from directing Star Trek 3 last month, Paramount has decided to completely discard the script he co-wrote with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, although he is still on board as a producer. Last week, we reported that actor-writer Simon Pegg will not only return as Scotty in the sequel, but he will also co-write the screenplay with Doug Jung. While it isn't known when production may begin on the sequel, which was given a summer 2016 release date last month, MTV caught up with Chris Pine at Sundance, who revealed that he thinks Simon Pegg is the perfect choice to write the script.

"We're all really excited because I think what we enjoy about it is that we have a laugh and we want to make sure that that's still kind of embedded in there so to have Simon writing it is the perfect fit. »

Simon Pegg to Pen 'Star Trek 3' Script

22 January 2015 7:00 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Scotty is trading in engineering for screenwriting: Simon Pegg, who plays the Scottish member of the Enterprise crew, will co-write the script for the upcoming sequel "Star Trek 3."

Pegg is no stranger to screenwriting, penning the scripts for Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy films "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz," and "The World's End" with the director; he also wrote the script for 2007 comedy "Run Fatboy Run." He's played Scotty in J.J. Abrams's reboot of the "Star Trek" franchise since 2009, most recently reprising the character in 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness." He'll once again play the character in the threequel.

Deadline reports that Pegg will co-write "Star Trek 3" along with Doug Jung, who created TNT series "Dark Blue" and wrote a movie called "Diamond" for "Trek" studio Paramount and production company Bad Robot. The duo has reportedly just begun the writing process, according to Deadline.

It's a pretty foregone conclusion that the principal cast members of the rebooted Star Trek franchise would be coming along for Star Trek 3. That includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg. But one of the crew members of the U.S.S. Enterprise has a new job outside of the ship as well. Deadline reports Simon Pegg will also now be responsible for co-writing the new draft of the script with Doug Jung, the creator of the TNT police drama series "Dark Blue." Previously, Roberto Orci was going to have his hand in writing the script, but that was before he departed the film. Simon Pegg Will Co-Write 'Star Trek 3'

21 January 2015 5:11 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It sounds like Paramount has completely thrown out former director Roberto Orci's Star Trek 3 script, which he wrote alongside J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Now Simon Pegg, who plays Enterprise engineer Scotty, will be penning the screenplay alongside Doug Jung, creator of the TNT series Dark Blue.

Justin Lin, who is credited with rejuvenating the Fast & Furious franchise, is confirmed to direct. This latest report also confirms that Simon Pegg will return as Scotty. Doug Jung previously wrote the film Diamond for Bad Robot and Paramount, which is how he landed the job. The writing duo are just getting underway.
