Actor Shia LaBeouf drank moonshine in order to gain as authentic an appearance as possible. By his own admission his drinking and over-aggressive attitude caused co-star Mia Wasikowska to try and leave the film.
The movie is based on actual events, as explained in the 2008 book "The Wettest County in the World" written by Matt Bondurant, grandson of Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf's character in the film).
Tom Hardy's character was originally supposed to be slimmer but Hardy had to bulk up for the movie The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf got into a physical altercation onset.
Amy Adams and Scarlett Johansson were originally cast, but the movie was shut down, and Jessica Chastain eventually got the role.
The Russian title of this film translates as "The Drunkest County in the World".
James Franco, Ryan Gosling, Scarlett Johansson, and Michael Shannon were originally slated to top line the project together with Shia LaBeouf.

Both Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman appeared in The Dark Knight Rises together.
According to director John Hillcoat, Tom Hardy actually saw his character as a maternal figure and many of the characters manners were modeled on Granny, from Friz Freleng's Loony Tunes series.
