The Story Behind The Ten Commandments
29 April 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The Ten Commandments is an episode of Mysteries Of The Bible that carefully studies and analyzes the set of laws that was given to Moses at Mount Sinai that has a set of moral instructions and how these set of commandments have stood the test of time that is manages to remain as society's guidelines in terms of morality and basis for the sets of laws made for many countries of the world. It is based from books of the Old Testament like Genesis,Exodus,Deuteronomy and the First Book Of Kings.Richard Kiley provides the narrative while Jean Simmons quotes the scriptures.Interviews from experts such as Rabbi David Wolpe, Carole Fontaine, Stephen Breck Reid, Father Thomas P. Rausch and Pamela Scalise were included.

The episode started with a summary of the Chosen People from Abraham to their escape from Egypt as slaves into their journey to the Promise Land. Then, the Golden Calf was discussed on why the Israelites have turned into idolatry and why they worshiped them.It was in this story that the experts started to discuss the first four set of laws on the ten commandments is primarily made to show love and obedience to God.Additionally, the experts also discussed as to the timing on why God gave these set of laws at a time when the Chosen People were in chaos. Then, the narrative and the discussion turned towards the sixth to the tenth commandment that set prohibitions murder, theft, dishonesty, and adultery.Added to that, the experts discussed the punishments meted on people who are found to violate them. The experts discussed how these sets of instructions were implemented at the time they were given and how different they were viewed back then as compared to how we see them at present.Aside from that, the viewer is also treated to the exact locations on the Holy Land on where the commandments were given to Moses. Finally, the narrative and discussion turned towards the Ark Of The Covenant,a chest wherein the tablets of the ten commandments are kept and preserved through many centuries and how it was carried at times of battles from the time of Moses to the time of King Solomon. Also, this said chest was kept in the temple of worship. They also analyzed on its whereabouts since it was lost during the Babylonian exile.

This is definitely a very informative episode as the viewer get knowledge about the ten commandments. We learn a lot about the commandments as a set of moral instructions that play a fundamental role for both Christians and Jews. The archaeological evidences gathered related to the narrative like the Temple built by King Solomon and lack of it like the missing tablets where the ten commandments were incribed will definitely intrigue viewers as the experts awkwardly discussed whether the story of Moses did really happen or they were just legends created by biblical writers. Finally, this also will make viewers realize as to what the world would have become if ever the ten commandments were not given (or created).
