Dread Central's Best and Worst of 2011

27 December 2011 7:06 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.

And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.

Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree, »

Vampires Run Amok During World War II in The Bleeding

31 August 2011 5:25 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We heard from the fine folks behind the WWII vampire project The Bleeding (not to be confused with Charlie Picerni’s direct-to-video action horror film that starred Michael Matthias, Vinnie Jones, Dmx, and Michael Madsen) a little while ago with an update and some fresh promo art for you. Get the skinny and the eye candy below!

German director Josef Rusnak (The Thirteenth Floor, It's Alive, The Contractor) is now attached to direct. Jeremy Wall (Jaz Films) optioned the script and is producing along with Corina Danckwerts. They produced the supernatural thriller The Objective, written and directed by Daniel Myrick (The Blair Witch Project). The Bleeding is based on a short story by Bram Stoker Award-nominated William R. Trotter entitled "The Bleeding of Hauptmann Gehlen". The script was penned by John and Paul Buckholts, who are also executive producing.

The Bleeding (2009)

16 May 2011 8:45 AM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by: Charlie Picerni

Written by: Lance Lane

Cast: Michael Matthias, Michael Madsen, Vinnie Jones, Rachelle Leah, Armand Assante, Dmx

I just finished watching The Bleeding and I'm just going to dive in here. I won't bother developing a clever thesis statement or a hook to hang the review on. The Bleeding is a bad movie. I mean, bad — B. A. D.

You look at the posters for The Bleeding and you see names like Vinnie Jones, Armand Assante and Michael Madsen, and you think, "Huh, those are some pretty big names." Let me hip you to a little insider movie secret: They aren't really big names. They’re "big enough" names, as in big enough to get a bad movie sold to a distributor, but not big enough open a "real" movie. Red flag.

The Bleeding was made a couple of years ago and it's been sitting on the shelf for a while, »

New this Week: ‘Rango,’ ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ and ’127 Hours (DVD)’

2 March 2011 4:00 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

The Adjustment BureauMatt Damon, Emily Blunt, Lisa Thoreson

BeastlyAlex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen

Rango – (voices of) Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant

Take Me Home TonightTopher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler

Movie of the Week

Rango

The Stars: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant

The Plot: A chameleon that aspires to be a swashbuckling hero (Depp) finds himself in a Western town plagued by bandits and is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it.

The Buzz: Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribean Trilogy, The Ring) takes a swash at his first animated feature. I thought the trailer for this film was excellent — Rango looks to be visually stunning, narratively engaging, and comically amusing. Verbinski’s adventure-film stripes are well earned — he knows his way around the genre — and this looks to be a strong addition to his filmography. »

This Week In Trailers: Circo, The Great White Silence, Norwegian Wood, All That Remains, Waste Land, The Bleeding

25 February 2011 8:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Circo Trailer Here in the southwest I think you can take a band like Calexico for granted.
