Delightful escapist comfort food television .

I really didn't know what to expect from All Creatures Great and Small . I being new the source material. I enjoyed it tenfold. Even the character Tristan Farnon I grew to appreciate. ANNA MADELEY as Mrs. Hall was my favorite this season . Her character is splendidly charming . The mixture of photogenic wildlife, ravishing Dales scenery and charming cast and script made for delightful escapist comfort food television . Very glad All Creatures Great and Small was renewed for a second season; and this James Herriot new adaptation will return once again to Farnon's veterinary practice in Darrowby. Good Stuff !

So looking forward to the next season.

Warning: Spoilers
So we've come to a cross road, much like James. I mean, both figuratively and literally, we have come to a cross road. Just in case the audience is a little dense, we are provided with an aerial view of an actual cross road. No, not little country road, but two broad, practically highways, crossing each other. And James, stopping right at this cross road, has a decision to make. OK, no one is surprised by this decision. But this maybe the attraction of this comfortable little show.

No violence (well, there is bloody surgery like Dr. Pimple Popper except with a cow, and forceps delivery with a dog), no sex (unless you consider James putting the blanket on a sleeping Helen, sex). No one died (OK, a horse died). Somehow, I so look forward to each episode, and now, the next season.

Just a little quibble. When Helen's marriage did not go through, why was she sitting in the church all by herself? Wouldn't her father and her sister be sitting with her?

Puppies save the day!
VetteRanger12 January 2023
Christmas Eve has arrived and it's the day before Helen's wedding, which will break James' heart. As Mrs. Hall and Siegfried's household prepare for a packed Christmas Eve party, an older couple well out in the countryside worries about the upcoming birth of their dog's puppies.

They worry so much that they call James from the party in the evening, and Helen, wanting a break from the tension of the upcoming nuptials (on Christmas Day no less!) decides to travel along with him.

The only problem? Fog rolls in and they become trapped out in the hills. Will the mama and the puppies be saved? Will Tristran solve the mystery of the donkey? Will people give Seigfried hell for dressing in green as Father Christmas? And will James get Helen back into town in time for her wedding?

A full episode and a fine ending to a first season which fully endeared the cast to us as much as the original cast.

Nicely Presented
Hitchcoc25 January 2024
James has settled in. He is saddened by recent events, primarily the engagement and quick marriage of Helen, the woman he adores. A Christmas party is held at the veterinary home and many friends appear, including a group of children dressed as shepherds. There are several romantic entanglements for us to observe, from Tristan and the barmaid to Siegfried and the woman he is taken with. James has been called away to help deliver some puppies. Helen, who is tired of all the questions about her wedding decides to ride along. What happens is a stroke of good fortune. Fog sets in and they are forced to stay at the house of the dog people. It is obvious that Helen is waiting for James to say something. But while there are lots of unspoken things, a major development presents itself as Season 1 concludes. It's a solid story.

Good stuff. Rather buried in the schedules though

Typically warm and engaging - this really has been one of the surprise hits of 2020.

The only curious thing is why Channel 5 weren't a bit braver and air this originally on Christmas Day. With the twaddle the two main channels were serving up I think this had a chance of doing rather well in the ratings.

Haven't been this moved since Carol Brady regained her voice...

Not a fan of Christmas episodes in February, but ACG&S still offers clean escapism from a hectic world.
