This is a remake of an episode of 'Please Sir!''s second season, entitled 'Out Of The Frying Pan'. In that, Fenn Street pupils were given disgusting food while Potter ( Deryck Guyler ) got free groceries in return for helping the grotesque Mrs.Savage ( Pat Nye ) keep her job as cook. Here its the late, great Roy Kinnear as 'Corporal Jenner', a man whose knowledge of hygiene could fit onto the head of a pin. He has an identical arrangement with Marsh.
Each day, the erks are given a chance to complain, but are to scared to do so. Fed up with the food, they elect to select someone to make a formal complaint. The unlikely 'winner' is Matthew...
As was the case with Vince Powell and Harry Driver, John Esmonde and Bob Larbey probably thought that, as there had been no 'Please Sir!' repeats for some time, it was okay for them to reuse the 'Out Of The Frying Pan' storyline. It works very well here, with both Kinnear and Selby on good form. At one point, they threaten to shop one another for various mis-deeds, and it escalates.
Marsh reads in a paper that commercial television is soon to get underway. "I don't know what the B.B.C.'s coming too!", he says. I.T.V. in fact started broadcasting in 1957.
Funniest moment - Marsh and Jenner thinking they have frozen Matthew to death. Suddenly, he speaks and walks away, and they jump out of their skins!
