I recently saw this at the 2008 Palm Springs International Short Fest. Matthew (Benjamin Walker) has a birthday routine. It falls on November 1st so he sits on the stoop of his row house in Manhattan's East Village sipping a cup of fresh brewed coffee and watches after sunup all the Halloween party revelers returning from all night parties still in their costumes. Lilly (Mamie Gummer) is one who has been out all night and Matthew takes interest in this disheveled Tinkerbell and offers her a cup of coffee and conversation. Theatrical director Will Frears, the son of noted film director Stephen Frears makes his film directorial debut with this short. He conceived the idea for the story from a friend who's birthday was November 1st and he told Frears how he would enjoy sitting on his stoop in the East Village and watch all the Halloween revelers coming home still in costume after an all-night of partying. Frears collaborated with Brooke Berman who wrote the screenplay. Gummer is the daughter of actress Meryl Streep and Walker has appeared in a couple of Oscar nominated films Flags of Our Fathers and Kinsey. Both turn in good performances here in this two person. one act teleplay. There are just so many people out still in costume so long after sunup it seems a little implausible to me. Matthew is virtually the only non costumed one but yet he comes across to me as the creepiest of all and I don't know why Lilly bothers with him in the cold November air. It's interesting but not much here. I would give it a 6.5 out of 10.
