Merlin: will it go out with a bang?

24 December 2012 2:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The young Camelot mob make their final exit tonight. Let's hope for an ending to remember …

Christmas Eve in the kingdom of Camelot, and an old prophet has said to his servant that King Arthur won't see another one. Yes, tonight sees the end of Merlin, BBC1's epic retelling of the Arthurian Legend. After five series, the Smallville-inspired tale of the young adventures of the Camelot mob is bowing out with a final flourish, broadcast at the heart of the Beeb's festive schedules. Plenty of us will be sad to see it go.

Back when nobody was sure whether Merlin would work, creator Johnny Capps spoke openly of a five-year plan, as if to politely ask the audience to stay with his vision. At that point the show wasn't up to much, as Stuart Heritage wrote some weeks ago: the Camelot 90210 premise was a handsome but daft exercise in capers-of-the-week, »

Merlin: The Diamond Of The Day Part 1 Review

23 December 2012 1:34 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Well, how about that. For the past seven days, myself and countless other fans were left wondering just how the writing team on Merlin could ever possibly match the turn of Mordred in The Drawing Of The Dark. How could any writer hope to accomplish such a feat in the midst of such worthy competition? By bringing us a penultimate episode that truly delivers on so many promises of the show, that’s how. It’s hard to think of anything more we could have asked of The Diamond Of The Day Part 1, and for those whispering the words “magic reveal” in my ears, the Next Time trailer should be evidence enough that the big shocks do not end here. Writing this review becomes simple in many ways, then, because speaking to the praises of this week’s adventure is incredibly easy- what’s difficult is just knowing when to stop! »

In just two days' time - on Christmas Eve - we'll find out how it all ends. Can you glean any clues from these final episode shots? We've (more) »

Merlin finale review: The Diamond Of The Day (Part 2)

22 December 2012 12:26 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Review Dave Adamson Dec 24, 2012

Merlin's fantastic journey concludes in an eventful, and fitting finale. Here's Dave's review...

This review contains spoilers.

5.13 The Diamond of the Day (Part 2)

Here it is, the last ever episode recap of this week's Merlin:

With the battle in full flow, Merlin drives back Morgana's forces, whilst Mordred stalks the knights, seeking Arthur. Even with the help of Aithusa, Morgana is unable to drive home her advantage, and the sight of Emrys is enough to drive her into a rage, before Merlin renders her unconscious.

With Mordred driving his blade into Arthur, and a valiant show of strength allowing Arthur to kill Mordred, the King is close to death, but removed from the battlefield by Merlin, whilst Gwen tends to the wounded and the enemy force is driven back.

As the two friends exchange words, with the King wounded and the wizard back to his youthful state, »

Merlin series 5 episode 12 review: The Diamond Of The Day (Part 1)

Review Dave Adamson Dec 22, 2012

Merlin's penultimate episode is a slow-burner featuring hugely impressive performances and action...

This review contains spoilers.

5.12 Diamond of the Day (Part 1)

As ever, let's begin with a recap of the episode's events:

Morgana has a new weapon in her arsenal, a creature capable of draining the magic from people. She sees nothing wrong in using this upon her former ally, Ari, despite Mordred voicing his reservations. She’s unstoppable, though, as she knows that without his magic, Merlin is powerless and that Camelot will surely fall if Arthur doesn’t have a powerful wizard - albeit unknowingly - in his midst.

Meanwhile, Arthur and Merlin are playing a dice game that the servant appears to be winning with the aid of magic. There's humour and merriment, with Merlin showing a wicked streak, winning plenty of money and making his master look a tad foolish, before retiring to his chambers, »

Katie McGrath has said that she would like to play a villain in the upcoming Star Wars sequels. The actress, who has played Morgana in five series of BBC One fantasy adventure Merlin, told Metro that she was excited by the planned follow-ups. "My friend once sculpted me a bust of Admiral Ackbar from Star Wars," said McGrath. "He's my favourite character in the films after Han Solo. He's that goldfish-type alien in the white costume. 'It's a trap!' I'm a big geek." She added of Episodes VII, VIII and IX: "I'm very excited about the possibility they could be like the first three, I'm a bit scared they might be like the prequels." 10 Christmas TV shows to circle in the Radio Times

Odd List Louisa Mellor Dec 20, 2012

We’ve put a spotlight on some of the UK Christmas telly specials you won’t want to miss this festive season…

You know that pub conversation we’ve all had, the one about what you’d show an alien race on the brink of wiping out planet Earth to convince them we are essentially a well-meaning, productive, and often beautiful species that deserves to live? No contest: a Christmas issue of the Radio Times.

In 1969, an astronaut walked on the moon and someone thought up the Christmas Radio Times, both of them landmarks of brilliant stuff achieved by humans. They must have been thinner then - not astronauts, copies of the Radio Times - back when there were fewer TV channels than there are now Shrek films.

Between the covers of that hefty double edition sits the industry and imagination of generations. It »

Merlin: The Drawing Of The Dark Review

17 December 2012 12:20 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

If ever we needed proof that the final battle of Camlann is well and truly on its way to the small screen in the remaining fortnight of Merlin’s final season of broadcasting, then The Drawing Of The Dark was most certainly it. For weeks now, we’ve had teasers and hints aplenty at the terrible war that will ensue across the kingdom in the two-part finale The Diamond Of The Day, and indeed the corruptible Mordred’s role within it. It’s now, though, that we see the rumours and rumblings reach their incredible satisfying crescendo.

The Drawing Of The Dark mirrors the previous Season Five highlight The Disir not only in its increased focus on the Mordred arc, but additionally in its posing of an intense moral dilemma for the regular cast to deal with. Admittedly, Angel Coulby’s Gwen was relegated to dinner »

The 24-year-old added that he was "a little surprised with some aspects of the ending" - which will air on BBC One on Christmas Eve. Merlin: The Kindness Of Strangers Review

10 December 2012 10:06 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Lo and behold, the end is truly approaching. If ever there were a time for the doom-laden nature of the fifth and final season of Merlin to reach its crux, the tenth instalment- The Kindness Of Strangers- is it, and thankfully the writers of the show make good on their promises to keep things dark and foreboding. Here, we have ominous hints at what’s to come for everyone’s favourite warlock, the Once and Future King and of course the druid Knight who can by no means be trusted. Was it another ground-breaking step forward as The Disir was a few weeks back? No, but there were still a few worthwhile surprises.

One thing’s for sure- right from the off, the culmination of the ‘Puppet Queen’ arc allowed for a stronger and more cohesive narrative. We moved back to the central arc of this season, »

Merlin: Colin Morgan on Merlin's Journey, An Extra Episode, and Playing Another Character

5 December 2012 11:12 AM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

I recently spoke with actor Colin Morgan about the Merlin last episode, season six, the possibility of him appearing in a spin-off, and what he'll miss most about the show. You can read that here.

I also asked him about his character's journey, something that he would have liked to have seen, another character he would have liked to play and more.

Do you have a favorite aspect of the Merlin character?

I think it's his ability to put himself to his sights and focus on the huge task that's been put in front of him, despite himself. He overcomes any ego and he becomes a little bit selfless. He is working towards a future for himself but he knows everyone has to come before him so he can live in that future. I admire his ability to do that. »

Merlin: Colin Morgan on the Ending, Spin-Offs, and What He'll Miss

As Merlin fans know, it was recently announced that the TV series is coming to an end after five seasons. The last episode will be airing in a couple weeks in the UK.

The final season of Merlin debuts on Syfy on January 4th and the last episode is expected to air on March 29th here in the States.

I recently had the opportunity to talk with the show's star, Colin Morgan, and I asked him about the possibility of a sixth season, if he'd be interested in taking part in a spin-off, if he felt satisfied by the finale, and what he'll miss most about the show.

There was some information coming out of Comic-Con last year that a sixth season and movies were being considered. Did you know, going into season five, that it was going to be the »

Merlin star Colin Morgan has insisted that fans will be "satisfied" with the show's two-part finale. The BBC fantasy drama will draw to a close on Christmas Eve, with Morgan - who plays the title character - telling TV Series Finale that the ending is "100% right". "It's all like I expected," he said. "You know, I wasn't sure where it was exactly going to go and certainly when I read the final script, I was surprised about the story that they told and the way they told it. But... I think everyone will be really satisfied with it." The Irish actor also admitted that he is unsure if he will star in any future Merlin movies or spinoff projects, citing the "risk" involved in reviving a much-loved franchise. Return To Camelot: 'Merlin' Prepares For Final Season

4 December 2012 7:42 PM, PST | GeekNation.com | See recent GeekNation news »

With Season 5 already confirmed as the final one for this BBC hit, excitement for the new and concluding episodes of "Merlin" have fans all a-twitter. Quite literally, actually, as the "Merlin" hashtag on the social media site Twitter updates almost by the minute. Clearly interest in the series hasn't waned, and star Katie McGrath -- who plays Morgana in the series -- tells Airlock Alpha exclusively why. "It represents all the best things about society that we no longer have," she said. "The age of chivalry isn't one that we live in now, and I think possibly that's one of the reasons the show's been so successful. You can look at this time and admire all the virtues that it has, and that Arthur personifies." In addressing some of the factors that helped shape Arthur and his destiny, »
