Hannah Spearritt spills the beans on new series of Primeval

30 December 2010 7:09 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Former pop star Hannah Spearritt says fans will be impressed by the comeback of Primeval.

In a new interview, she reveals how the primetime show has been revamped for its return to the screen - and also takes us behind the scenes on her relationship with co-star Andrew-Lee Potts.

When the dinosaur drama was cancelled after three series, it wasn't only the fans who were shocked. Hannah Spearritt, who plays Abby, says she was left stunned too.

"It was a tough time for everybody - there were a few shows that were unfortunately dropped because of the credit crunch," says the 29-year-old.

"It was bizarre because when we spoke to people on the street there was a sense that the public really believed in the show."

Spearritt took advantage of her time off by enjoying what she calls "life time".

'Merlin' star: 'Show butchers the legend'

21 December 2010 6:28 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Merlin star Bradley James has claimed that the show "butchered the Arthurian legend". The actor told SciFiNow that the BBC drama should not be considered a "definitive telling" of the Camelot myth. "We're here to provide Saturday night escapism," he explained. "People should not take what we've done as a be-all and end-all of the legend, because it's really not the case." He continued: "It kind of changes the story because primarily [the show is] about... Merlin. You can chop up other characters' storylines, but as long as you're telling the story of Merlin, it's kind of okay." He (more) »

TV Review: Dirk Gently

17 December 2010 3:32 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

A lesser-known property from the late Douglas Adams (creator of The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy), Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was nevertheless a novel Adams thought would be easier to film than his revered sci-fi opus. Previously turned into radio plays with Harry Enfield as the gumshoe, BBC4 have decided to put Dirk Gently on-screen for the first time, adapted by in-demand screenwriter Howard Overman (Misfits, Vexed). Stephen Mangan (Green Wing) plays the eponymous sleuth, who believes in “the fundamental interconnectedness of all things”, and applies this theory of quantum mechanics to solve superficially innocuous crimes.

Overman has wisely excised much of the book’s budget-swallowing imagination into something achievable on a frugal budget; bringing the idea down-to-earth as an eccentric cousin to the BBC’s Sherlock update. Purists may grumble this isn’t the Dirk Gently they wanted to see, but it’s more accessible and practicable. »

Episode Recap: Merlin - 3.05: "The Crystal Cave"

10 December 2010 11:16 AM, PST | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Arthur (Bradley James) and Merlin (Colin Morgan) are being pursued by bandits in the forest, in a scene reminiscent of the BBC's other successful drama, Robin Hood (TV), as fans of this will recall. Arthur tells Merlin they'll outrun them before asking why Merlin never trusts him. Of course they don't outrun them and Arthur leads Merlin into a cave, and tells him he should trust him and that's coming from a future king. It's actually called The Valley of the Fallen Kings. Merlin tells him it's cursed but Arthur says it's only a myth. They'll be safe from the bandits and Merlin should, "trust me." Arthur is shot in the back by an arrow, as expected whenever he says to trust him, that's when things go awry. Merlin sees no possible way out for them and attempts to provide comfort to Arthur. He believes Arthur is dying. In this »

First trailer for BBC Four’s ‘Dirk Gently’

8 December 2010 2:45 PM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

The BBC have debuted the first trailer for their new BBC Four drama based on Douglas Adams’ cult novel, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.

Anti-hero Dirk Gently operates his eponymous detective agency based on the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. Perpetually broke, hopelessly chaotic and utterly infuriating, most people suspect Dirk is nothing more than a cheap conman. And they might be right – but nevertheless his methods, though unusual, do often produce surprising results. When Dirk sets out to solve an apparently simple and harmless disappearance of a cat from an old lady’s house, he unwittingly uncovers a double murder which, in turn, leads to a host of even more extraordinary events.

Dirk Gently stars Stephen Mangan as the eponymous hero, alongside Darren Boyd (Royal Wedding, Little Dorrit) as his unwitting sidekick Richard Macduff and Helen Baxendale (Cold Feet, Friends) as Richard’s girlfriend Susan in the adaptation by Bafta-winning Howard Overman (Misfits, »

Merlin star promises exciting stories ahead, dismisses Doctor Who battle

2 December 2010 2:42 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

As magical drama Merlin heads towards the finale of its third series this coming Saturday, actor Bradley James - who plays Prince Arthur - says there are still many exciting stories to tell.

And he dismisses any notion of trying to beat the BBC's No1 drama Doctor Who, insisting that Merlin's sword-and-sorcery and the Time Lord's sci-fi travels could happily co-exist without rivalry.

Asked if he wanted to see Merlin weave a spell to the top spot, he said: "I don't think we will ever need to take over from Doctor Who - there is more than enough room in the world for both."

Bradley - who says his own hero is his mum and admits he relies on his youthful metabolism to stay in shape for the numerous shirtless shots - also rejects any criticism that the title of the show may not be the right name for an ensemble piece. »

"Dexter", "Merlin" Get Renewals

2 December 2010 10:12 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

An official announcement is shortly expected confirming that Showtime drama "Dexter" has been renewed for a sixth season to begin airing late 2011 says The Hollywood Reporter.

Last Sunday's episode, the tenth of twelve in the current fifth season, pulled in a season high of 2.5 million viewers - up 43 per cent from the fifth season premiere.

Back in 2008 Showtime renewed Dexter for two further seasons (fourth and fifth). A dual season renewal wasn't made this time as cast contracts will expire at the conclusion of a sixth season (and thus will require a heavy round of renegotiations).

Meanwhile, The BBC are reportedly already in talks over a fifth season of family fantasy drama series "Merlin" as the show's third season finale gets set to air this weekend in the UK reports Atv Today.

A month ago the network ordered a fourth season of the series to air in 2011. This fourth season »

Merlin: Possible Season Five and Specials for BBC

1 December 2010 1:30 PM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Several weeks ago, it was announced that Merlin was renewed for a fourth season to debut in 2012 overseas. Though that's good news for fans of the show, some have been concerned because the series was renewed for only 10 episodes versus the usual baker's dozen. Does this mean that the show is coming to a close?

Merlin showrunner Julian Murphy tells SFX that the reduced episode order came down to finances. He said, "Merlin is an expensive show... and what we are not prepared to do is cut its budget or production values. The BBC has had a really tough [financial] hit."

On the positive side, Murphy noted that, "We are now discussing the fifth series with the BBC, and I think [the 2011 break] potentially preserves the program for longer. There is [also] talk of specials [and other] ways we can »

Both actors have made the rounds in one-off roles on network and cable TV for the last decade. The two are the first time travelers to be cast (assuming that’s…

After a day of hunting, Arthur (Bradley James) insists he's in need of some mead. Merlin (Colin Morgan) mistakenly believes it's sleep that he needs, not mead. They stop at a local tavern where Arthur posits he can tell what people are thinking about him in such a place. The bar wench pays a compliment, which Arthur thinks is directed at him, but it's Merlin she finds handsome! There's the usual trouble in the tavern; as we know by now, where Arthur goes, trouble is never far behind. Season three of Merlin is set to kick off on Syfy on Friday, January 7th reports The Futon Critic.

The fantasy series, revolving around young versions of the legendary Merlin and King Arthur, is produced overseas for the BBC and is distributed all over the world. NBC cancelled Merlin after one season but Syfy took it over and aired season two from April to July of this year. It performed well enough that the cable channel purchased season three.

At the time, Merlin creator/executive producer Johnny Capps said, "The upcoming season will add an exciting new twist to Merlin's ongoing struggle to protect Prince Arthur, as well as thrilling audiences with bigger and bolder action sequences, stunning CGI monsters, mysterious villains and comic fun for all the family."

Whilst on a quest for a book for Gaius (Richard Wilson), Merlin (Colin Morgan) chances upon a secret room in the library and sets loose a goblin, which proceeds to cause havoc on Camelot. This is Merlin (TV)'s comedic episode, as every series of the show has at least one or two episodes that are played purely for laughs. A case of Merlin opening Pandora's box, instead of leaving things alone. The goblin had been trapped in the box for over 50 years and now he's out; he's going to have fun...and breaks things. The goblin appeared to be Merlin's answer to Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. The goblin escapes Merlin's attempts to ensnare him and starts to throw books around, incidentally, actually throwing the one Merlin was looking for. Then scours the castle in search of gold. Arthur chances upon Merlin and his messy bed chamber. »
