Merlin star Colin Morgan: Darker themes and 'big things to come' in third series

28 December 2009 6:47 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Actor Colin Morgan is most famous for playing the title role in the BBC1 fantasy adventure series Merlin, which follows the early years of the sorcerer at Camelot.

Born in Armagh, Northern Ireland, the 23-year-old has also appeared on the Catherine Tate Show and in the acclaimed Doctor Who episode Midnight in 2008.

The second series of Merlin recently ended on BBC1 and will be out on DVD in February. A third series has been commissioned and in a new interview, Colin has spoken about what's coming and also what he would like to see in the show.

How Did Working On The Second Series Of Merlin Compare To The First Run?

When we first started on the series, filming was new to me. So whenever you start on a second series you're familiar with the technical things for a start. Also there's the character - you know how to approach a scene, »

Merlin | Ad of the Decade | The Fattest Man in Britain | Cranford | TV Review

20 December 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Who'd have thought that Merlin's long-lost dad would turn out to be Eric Cantona?

In Merlin (BBC1, Saturday), the not- very-scary-looking dragon with the voice of John Hurt has escaped and gone mental. He's napalming Camelot to buggery. Could Listerine be the solution? (Remember the advert, with Clifford? "Clifford!") Maybe, but unfortunately Listerine hasn't been invented yet. So instead they need a dragon whisperer to calm the beast down. Oops, Arfur's old man Oofer had all the dragon whisperers executed. He can be a pillock, the king – no foresight, no wisdom, no compassion, no kingly qualities whatsoever.

Wait though, because apparently there's one dragon whisperer left, living in a cave a long way away. So Arthur and Merlin set off to fetch him, and indulge in some blokey adolescent banter along the way. Boys! The dragon whisperer, when they eventually find him, turns out to be a dead ringer for Eric Cantona, »

As Merlin wraps up its second season on the air in the UK, the cast and crew have received some good news. They'll be going back to work for a third round of episodes.

Merlin tells the story of the legendary wizard's early adulthood, living in the court of King Uther, Arthur's father. The series features Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Gwen, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt as the voice of the Great Dragon.

In the UK, the ratings were strong enough for BBC One to renew Merlin for a second season back in December 2008. Season two began airing in September 2009 and will finish on December 19th. While viewership has dropped a bit, the ratings are high enough for BBC One to greenlight a »

News: Demons, Finally!

Sf Universe reports that Demons Are Coming to BBC America, January 2.

Merlin’s Richard Wilson recruits a teenaged descendent of Van Helsing to fight things bumping in the night.

Christian Cooke plays the descendent, Luke Rutherford.

Here's a YouTube clip:

The videos I’ve seen posted make it look fun, with a good combination of danger, humor, and creature effects. It sounds like the perfect companion to BBC America’s Being Human. Like that show, though, the season ends way too quickly.

Merlin star Colin Morgan has revealed that fans of the show are often confused by his accent. The 23-year-old, who is originally from Northern Ireland, told SFX magazine that people assume he is English because his titular role on the BBC One series requires him to disguise his Irish accent. He said: "One of my mates told me that a work colleague was saying, 'Is that your friend who does Merlin? His accent's really changed'. Well, yeah, it's called acting! Big-name guest stars add magic to Merlin

14 September 2009 10:16 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Arthurian adventure series Merlin returns to BBC1 this weekend with a host of big-name guest stars joining the regular cast for its 13-week run.

Having enchanted audiences of more than 6.3 million in its inaugural series, the show promises more magic, mystery, adventure and romance for Season 2 as the young wizard struggles to keep his powers hidden in the increasingly perilous world of Camelot.

Mackenzie Crook (Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Office, Skins, Demons) is to guest-star in the opening episode as the creepy Cedric (pictured right), who is determined to muscle in on Merlin's position as Arthur's right-hand-man - much to the sorcerer's frustration.

Sarah Parish (Mistresses, Cutting It) will play a horrible troll masquerading as the beautiful Lady Catrina; Adrian Lester (Hustle, Bonekickers) is the devious Myror; Charles Dance (Bleak House, Gosford Park) will guest-star as Aredian, the sinister Witchfinder; and Santiago Cabrera (Heroes) returns as the dashing Lancelot. »

Though the show attracted a devoted audience on NBC, it looks highly unlikely that NBC will be bringing Merlin back for a second season. Its ratings were anything but magical for the peacock network.

Fortunately for UK viewers, the show has been a success for the BBC. The first season of Merlin began airing in September of 2008 over there and ran through December. Soonafter, the network announced that a second season had been ordered.

Colin Morgan returns as the young sorcerer who must fulfill his destiny and protect Prince Arthur (Bradley James). Other regular castmembers include Anthony Head, Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby, and Richard Wilson.

'Merlin' - To Kill the King/Le Morte d'Arthur

28 August 2009 8:05 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

This story may contain spoilers. We were treated to two episodes of "Merlin" on Sunday, one about the assassination of Uther (Anthony Stewart Head), and one about the death of Arthur (Bradley James). Apparently, someone wants those pesky royals dead! In .To Kill The King,. Uther orders the death of Guinevere's (Angel Coulby) father for aiding a known sorcerer. In a show that doesn.t usually make any bold moves, the guards actually do kill him. This reminds Morgana (Katie McGrath) of the death of her own father, whom she still blames Uther for, and she plots to have Uther killed by the sorcerer. At the last moment she changes her mind when Uther admits to feeling remorse for the death of her dad. For once Merlin wasn.t the one to save the day; it was Morgana. This was a good twist »

Ask the Flying Monkey! (August 24, 2009)

23 August 2009 6:32 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: Years ago, I read about the gay kiss between Topher Grace and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in an episode of That ‘70s Show called "Eric's Buddy." Apparently that kiss had some kind of historical significance, like first primetime kiss between two men or something like that? Could you find out what the significance was, if any? – Mark, Johnson City, Tn

A: Okay, this is too weird! Just last week, I was at a party, talking to Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem, the creators of the great new show Nurse Jackie (and who both happen to be lesbians). At one point, one of them mentioned a “gay episode” on the first season of That ‘70s Show, a show they’d worked on previously. I didn’t remember seeing it, but I thought it »

Imho "Merlin" (1.10): Merlin decides to come out!

17 August 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Finally!

NBC aired two episodes of Merlin last night, and after ten episodes, they finally showed one with a fair amount of hoyay (or gay subtext).

Merlin's home village is threatened by a warlord, but when his mother comes to Camelot asking Uther for help, he turns her down. So Merlin decides he must leave Arthur and go back to the village.

(Incidentally, what about all of Merlin's vows in earlier episodes to protect Arthur — his answering of the dragon's call, and that their destinies are completely intertwined, etc. etc.? All completely forgotten, at least for this episode.)

Anyway, the hoyay is soon flying fast and furious. Why did Merlin leave his village in the first place? "I just didn't fit in anymore," he says. "I wanted to find somewhere where I do."

When Merlin talks to the former village bully, the bully says, "Why did you leave? »

How is 'Merlin' faring in America?

4 August 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

The BBC's Merlin managed to conjure up some magic before it hit UK television screens last year. For broadcaster NBC snapped up the first season to show on mainstream American television during primetime, which is almost unheard of for a British show. Even the revitalised Doctor Who is limited to the niche Sci Fi and BBC America channels across the pond. But has Merlin been slaying the American critics and viewers? Read on... Given its quintessentially British nature, Merlin always faced an uphill battle to make inroads into the cutthroat Us market. Would appearances by the likes of Richard Wilson and Will Mellor serve up any postmodern thrills for non-Brits? I don't believe it, as Victor Meldrew (aka Gaius) might say. The recurring presence of Michelle Ryan as the wicked sorceress Nimueh might also put off viewers, given the star's part in the (more) »

Imho "Merlin" (1: 9): The Sword and the Stoner

3 August 2009 2:46 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

I confess I'm still getting used to this whole "hoyay" thing. Gay subtext, I understand. But projected gay subtext where it can all be in the mind of the viewer? That's ridiculously open-ended, isn't it?

Still, even on the "wishful thinking" front, there wasn't much hoyay between Merlin and Arthur in "Excalibur," last night's episode of Merlin (although Merlin did admit, "You could say there's a bond between us").

Still, there were some serious Brokeback-Camelot sparks flying between Arthur and King Uther, who said to him, "You mean more to me than anything I know — more than my own kingdom, and certainly my own life."

Granted, the characters are father and son, which is admittedly very creepy, but if fans of Supernatural can overlook the fact that they're supposed to be brothers, I can overlook that.

And did you catch the way the Black Knight was eyeing Arthur?

Okay, that last comment was (1) truly icky, »
