Michael Bay says Transformers: The Last Knight “gets us back in the groove” after Age of Extinction

21 May 2017 6:38 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

While the continue to prove immensely popular at the box office, Michael Bay’s Transformers films have certainly suffered diminishing returns in terms of quality, with the most recent instalment Transformers: Age of Extinction hammered by critics, despite its attempts to take the franchise in a new direction.

Nevertheless, Bay is back in the director’s chair for the upcoming fifth instalment Transformers: The Last Knight, and speaking to Empire, the filmmaker has suggested that the latest chapter will get the series “back in the groove” after the disappointing reception for Age of Extinction.

“[Transformers: Age of Extinction] was kind of an outlier,” said Bay. “Because of losing Shia and just figuring out where we were gonna go. It was testing the waters a little bit. This gets us back in the groove.”

Looking beyond The Last Knight, Paramount and Hasbro have big, big plans for the franchise, with a Bumblebee prequel movie set »

Michael Bay built a Stonehenge replica for Transformers: The Last Knight, and blew it up

1 May 2017 3:14 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

As we’ve come to be accustomed to from Michael Bay movies – and the Transformers franchise in particular – we can expect to see plenty of destruction in this summer’s Transformers: The Last Knight. And it seems that will extend to the UK’s iconic landmark Stonehenge, with actress Laura Haddock revealing that Bay built a replica of the ancient monument so that he could blow it up.

“Michael’s sets are practical, so you would think that maybe 90 percent of this film is done on green screen, and it’s really not,” Haddock told EW. “He loves an explosion. He absolutely loves them, so if he can use them safely, he will. Often you’re running through what feels like a genuine … battlefield. Something that kind of builds your adrenaline. You’re absolutely experience what it feels like to have an explosion go off just behind you. And you’re just running, »

Star Laura Haddock also revealed a little bit information about the Autobot, who has been serving as her protector under the guise of her father’s old 1963 Citroën DS, as well discussing her character Viviane Wembly’s relationship with her father (Anthony Hopkins) following the revelation:

“It’s a rickety old thing, but she can’t part with it because she adores it,” Haddock says of the vintage vehicle. “This car has actually been put there to watch her and feedback information to Anthony Hopkins’s character about what she’s up to and her life. So yeah, she gets kind of taken [by surprise] in a really funny, dramatic way by this Hot Rod. »

Anthony Hopkins calls Michael Bay a “genius,” likens him to Steven Spielberg

9 April 2017 3:55 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

When talking about the most brilliant filmmakers of our time, you’d be hard-pressed to find yourself in a conversation where Michael Bay’s name makes an appearance: unless you’re talking to Sir Anthony Hopkins, of course.

During a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies about the upcoming fifth installment in Bay’s Transformers film franchise, Transformers: The Last Knight (which marks the first collaboration between Hopkins and Bay), Hopkins had nothing but praise for the much-talked-about, little-respected director.

The actor said, “[Bay] was telling me about the work he did on [the Transformers bots] – how he would refine them and go into the special effects guys and design them and get all the details of light on metal and all that. He told me all that at breakfast before I started on the film. I thought ‘This guy’s a genius. He really is.’ He’s the same ilk as Oliver Stone and Spielberg and Scorsese. »

Paramount has 14 more Transformers stories written, Michael Bay interested in directing one

5 April 2017 3:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

No matter how bad the critical reception dips there is no arguing that the Transformers movies are anything but hugely successful at the box office.

That trend will likely continue this summer with the release of Transformers: The Last Knight, before Paramount Pictures extends the franchise with the fruits of its Transformers writers room, beginning with a Bumblebee spinoff movie in 2018.

Although Michael Bay has previously said that The Last Knight will be his last Transformers movie, the director been chatting to MTV about the future of the franchise, revealing that he may not be done with the series after all.

“There are 14 stories written and there’s good stuff,” said Bay, who has helmed every instalment in the series so far. “I would like to do one of them though… A Transformers spinoff.”
