Being introduced to the terrific BBC Comedy series Still Game by a friend last year with the wonderful X-Mas special Cold Turkey,I decided that I would watch the programs "Hogmanay" special as a way to ring in the new year.
The plot:
Waving farewell to his wife as she goes on a 2 week holiday, local shop owner Navid Harrid begins to celebrate, due to having 2 whole weeks of being a bachelor again.During his celebration's,fear suddenly hits Harrid, when he realises that there is a strong chance that his wife will run into her old friend.
Counting down the days to the New Year,Jack and Victor decide to accept a bet of being able to reach an isolated Scotish island,to celebrate New Years day on.Reaching the island,Jack and Victor almost want to leave the island the moment they set their feet upon it,due to using some ill- judge words in the local pub, which have made the residents less than happy.
View on the episode:
For the wonderful teleplay,writers/lead actors Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill include a number of subtle one liners related to the Horror film The Wicker Man as a way to cleverly show how isolated the residents on the island are.
Whilst Kiernan and Hemphill do make the most out of the unsettling character's that Jack and Victor meet on the island, the writers surprisingly decide not to include any sharp one liners about Jack and Victor being able to hire a private plane to take them half way to the isolated island,to ring in the new year.
