A shaky start on DVD of a recut television series
27 November 2010 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Executive producer George Lucas completely overhauled a television series to create new feature length adventures for DVD.

This first movie, "My First Adventure" was a noble but rather shaky start.Mercifully this production had a lot more effort and resource put intoit than Lucas's last attempt to cash in on a successful movie franchise. That is, the first dreadful EWOK TV film. Lucas was also very bold to start this series with a young Corey Carrier playing a 9 year old Indy. It was also refreshing the the focus of this deals with interesting characters rather than action, which would have only looked cheap and exploitative on TV. The cast is solid, particularly Lloyd Owen in Connery's role as a younger Henry Jones Senior, and a standout by Maragaret Tyzack as Indy's teacher Helen Seymour. Its interesting to notice lots of classy British character actors cast in guest roles, which gives the movie a greater weight. British actor Kevin McNally is impressive in this show as a friend of Henry Jones Senior.

The story centres around a tour by Indiana Jones Senior and the antics that Indy gets up to. Additional footage was shot some years later to facilitate the recuting of stand alone 1 hour episodes into 2 hour movies, and as such there are some huge continuity issues with Corey Carrier looking VERY different. However the story and other performances are just about strong enough to mitigate this rather jarring effect. In the latter part of the story there are some well handled(and integral to the plot)action sequences (certainly for a TV show),albeit its horrendously patronising to convince the audience that the Caucasiancharacters can disguise themselves as Africans with oil on their faces and sits at odds with a potentially interesting story about slavery.

Interestingly a lot of the crew from cameramen to production designers are people that would contribute significantly to Lucas's return to the Star Wars saga some 7 years after starting on this.

If you get over that Indy looks like is being played by 2 brothers, which is pretty difficult, then is an OK if a bit shaky start to these DVD movies. However, it does get better as you get into the series
