Ageing gay lecturer R.G. Cole is strangled after going to watch an illegal bare knuckle boxing match. He was also due to stage a Wagner festival sponsored by South African club owner Hansie Kriel, whose daughter Sarah was literally being fought over by two of the young boxers. One of them, student Milo Hardy, is also murdered following a trip to Berlin, where Hansie plans to open a new club and from where Cole's protege Richard Helm and his mother Valli escaped during the Cold War. Robbie believes that the victims were about to identify the Stasi informant responsible for Valli's liberal husband's death over twenty years before and sends Sergeant Hathaway to Germany to prove this . The culprit's identity will unfortunately play havoc with Robbie's love life.- Written by don @ minifie-1
DI Lewis and DS Hathaway investigate the murder of of a German history lecturer from the University, R.G. Cole, who is strangled at a friend's house. He and Richard Helm had been out drinking and had gone to Helm's house when they were thrown out of a local club for drunkenness. When Helm returns from a quick to the off-license, he finds the lecturer dead. The forensic evidence points the police in the direction of the University Boxing Club as well as to the owners of the club that had thrown out Cole and Helm. At the latter, Lewis meets the soon to be divorced owner Ann Kriel who definitely shows an interest in him. The solution to the crime lies in the discovery of a bare-knuckle fighting club as well ad the identity of a one-time East German informant whose reporting to the State Police, the Stasi, led to the death of a prominent professor of Wagnerian music. A death in which, Lewis learns, his old boss and mentor DCI Morse inadvertently played a part.- Written by garykmcd
