When Monk's neighbor Kevin is found dead backstage at a magic show, Monk begins to suspect Kevin's old mentor, The Great Torini. The problem is, he has a perfect alibi.

Storyline

Monk's neighbor Kevin Dorfman's been doing the books at a magic club. He questions one the magicians, Torini about how the load he cam back with from a recent tour in Asia was heavier as oppose to when he left. Torini tries to side step the issue by telling Kevin who's been training to be a magician that he has to go out of town and that he wants him to fill in for him. Kevin invites Monk and on the night he's suppose to go on, Kevin is killed. Monk who found Kevin's body suspects Torini because he saw someone walk out of Kevin's dressing room before he went in and while he didn't see his face, one of his gestures is like Torini. But Torini was not only out of town, he called the club and spoke to everyone on the speaker, so how could he have been the one Monk saw.

A magical mustered tour

Monk is challenged by a sly magician (Steve Valentine) whom Monk believes has killed an associate even though the magician was apparently hundreds of miles away at the time. In the process of uncovering the plot, Monk himself almost dies at the hands of the magician. Valenine, best known as one of the city morgue workers on CROSSING JORDAN, also played a magician on HOUSE, MD last year. Maybe he does a magic act when he's not doing TV or movies. Monk's old neighbor, the one who won the lottery and almost died as a result, is back for a brief appearance The episode is a bit hard to swallow in terms of the commission of the crime, but Valentine as a truly evil and egotistical prestidigitator keeps things moving along.
