The Man and His Dream: A Francis Ford Coppola Profile (Part 5)

2 December 2010 1:44 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Trevor Hogg profiles the career of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola in the fifth of a five-part feature... read parts one, two, three and four.

Shot over a course of eighty-six days, Youth Without Youth (2007) is a cinematic adaptation of the novella by Mircea Eliade. Struck by lightning, a timid seventy year old academic (Tim Roth) finds himself growing younger in 1938 Romania. “My and Tim’s interpretation was that he was this gentle, older professor who had never even had the courage to take the woman he loved because he was so bookish and sweet,” revealed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. “I made the style very deliberately classical; it allowed me to do what I’ve always wanted to do [which] is to make a movie without any [camera] movement.”

Chosen to be the romantic love interest in the $19 million production was Alexandra Maria Lara (Control). “I thought Alexandra was an actress who »

Last night, Twilight star Cam Gigandet ("James") made a splash at the Los Angeles premiere of Burlesque, his newly releasing film with Christina Aguilera and Cher.

(Burlesque debuts next Wednesday, November 24th nationwide.)

As always, Gigandet looked extraordinarily spiffy at the premiere, and you can check out photos of his appearance in the attached slideshow.

This is one of many films Gigandet has appeared in since 2008's Twilight. Most notably, Gigandet has since starred in Pandorum, Easy A, and next May's Priest.

He also recently worked on a film called Trespass with Nicole Kidman and Nicholas Cage - release date yet to be set - and a n »

Afm 2010: Mma Star Cung Le Takes The Lead In Breaking Point

5 November 2010 6:01 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

[Updating this post with today's news that Phase 4 films have pre-bought all Us rights to the film. It aint made yet but we know who'll be releasing it when it is.]

I declare my bias on this one right up front: Xyz Films - the La company that I'm a partner in - are serving as executive producers on this one and the lead producer - Hawaii International Film Festival programmer Anderson Le - is a long time friend. Do with that what you will. What I do with it is toss it all aside as irrelevant because with the talent attached to this script - which I've read and is fantastic - this is going to be a fantastic film by any measure.

Mma star Cung Le - recently seen on screen fighting Donnie Yen in Hong Kong action drama Bodyguards and Assassins - will take the lead in Journey From The Fall director Ham Tran's English language martial arts film Breaking Point. Producing are Xyz Films, Media 8 Entertainment and Vietnam-based Chanh Phuong Films. For those unfamiliar with the name, »

Mma Fighter Cung Le Joins Wong Kar-Wai's Yip Man Biopic, 'The Grand Master'

30 October 2010 9:04 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Project Won't Finish Shooting At Least Until Early 2011, 'Matrix' Fight Choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping Now Involved Vietnamese-American Mixed Martial Arts fighter Cung Le has evidently joined the cast of Wong Kar Wai's still in production biopic on Bruce Lee mentor Yip Man, "The Grand Master." The fighter has been slowly insinuating himself into the acting world with supporting roles in "Pandorum," "Fighting" and "Tekken," a role lined up in RZA's "The Man With The Iron Fist" and a lead slot in an upcoming Joel Silver production "Dragon Eyes," described as an Mma-tinged "Yojimbo" style pic--as horrible as that sounds. Case 39 Review

1 October 2010 7:46 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

"Ludicrous thriller" may not sound like a compliment, but rest assured that in the case of Christian Alvart's Case 39, released wide today in the Us, it is both an accurate description and more than modest praise. Shelved for more than two years and thus unfairly assumed to be dreck, the film instead proves to be an intense drama that touches on the horrific before morphing into something else.

Coming in cold, without prior knowledge of the plot's twists and turns, it took me a while to figure out in what sub-genre the film belongs. Once that becomes clear, the plot's trajectory becomes more predictable. Even with full knowledge, however, I'd argue that Alvart's ability to steer the narrative through sharp, tight turns without slowing down gives the proceedings a giddy rush that overcomes the story's more ridiculous elements.

The opening sequences set the tone for a family abuse scenario. »

Top Critics Gave New ‘Case 39′ Movie Very Negative Reviews So Far

1 October 2010 3:16 PM, PDT | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

Top critics gave new 'Case 39' movie very negative reviews so far. Paramount Vantage released their new horror flick "Case 39" into theaters today, and the top critics don't seem to be to impressed with it so far. Right now, only three reviews are in,so it might pick up some steam later on. The movie stars: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O’Malley, Callum Keith Rennie, Adrian Lester, Georgia Craig, and Cynthia Stevenson. Ian Nathan at Empire gave it a C- rating . He stated, "Manages to be both very silly and highly forgettable. Only for those who collect killer-children films." Jordan Mintzer at Variety gave it a very bad D rating . He said, "This ludicrous outing from helmer Christian Alvart "Pandorum" and scribe Ray Wright "The Crazies" takes its psycho-satanic babble much too seriously, and should elicit more laughs than frights." »

Exclusive 'Case 39' Clip Breaks Down Doors

1 October 2010 7:35 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Filed under: Trailers and Clips, Horror

If you've seen any of the trailers or posters for Paramount's long overdue 'Case 39,' then you may think that it's just another thriller about an innocent adult who lets a not-so-innocent little kid into their home. I assure you it is not. Much as director Christian Alvert's most recent film, 'Pandorum,' looked like just another horror film set on a spaceship, there's actually much more than expected going on underneath 'Case 39's' surface.

If you need some empirical evidence to back up that claim, Moviefone has been given an exclusive (and very cool) clip from the film to debut. But first, a synopsis:

"Prompted to rescue ten-year-old Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) from her parents after allegations of abuse suggest that the child is not safe in her own home, kind-hearted social worker Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger) discovers »

Mma Fighter Cung Le Set for New Mma Project 'Dragon Eyes'

24 September 2010 11:53 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Is mixed martial arts on the rise in cinema, too? I doubt it, but you never know. Deadline reports that Mma star Cung Le, who actually appeared in Christian Alvart's Pandorum as well as Dito Montiel's Fighting, is set to star in another Mma-themed project. Joel Silver's Dark Castle is developing the action crime drama Dragon Eyes that will star Le as a mysterious man who comes from an impoverished part of New Orleans to unite two warring gangs against the corrupt lawmen who've been using them. Doesn't sound too exciting. The movie is a modernization of Kurosawa's classic Yojimbo. Shooting begins next month in Baton Rouge. We tried to find more information about who is directing or who wrote the script, but had no luck, as there is nothing listed and Deadline doesn't say anything either. Mixed martial arts (Mma) and leagues like the Ufc are extremely popular nowadays, »

Cung Le Has Dragon Eyes

Mixed martial arts fighter and burgeoning action movie star (well, sort of) Cung Le is set to anchor the Mma-themed crime drama “Dragon Eyes”. Joel Silver’s Dark Castle and After Dark Films will produce the film, which starts shooting in Baton Rouge next month. Le plays a mysterious man who comes from an impoverished part of New Orleans to unite two warring gangs against the corrupt lawmen who’ve been using them. It’s a modernization of the Kurosawa film “Yojimbo”. Le, the former Strikeforce milddleweight champion, has appeared in a handful of films like “Dark Assassin”, “Fighting”, and “Pandorum”, and will be in the upcoming “Tekken” movie. He has definite potential to become a solid movie tough guy, and he seems to realize that people want to see him fight, not talk, so he generally keeps his mouth shut and sticks to kicking people. Case 39 Delivers A Pair Of Teasers

20 September 2010 1:00 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Renee Zellweger, Bradley Cooper (who has to be the hardest working and most diverse actor in big Hollywood today) and Ian McShane anchor Case 39 and with the film delivering a pair of fresh TV spots recently a couple of thoughts come leaping to mind.

One, Ian McShane is quite possibly the most believable actor working today. I don't know what it is about this guy but whether he's working with good material (Deadwood) or less good material (Death Race) if it's coming out of his mouth I'm just automatically inclined to believe it. This bodes well for Case 39, with McShane's character playing a cop who's going to have to be won over to accept the supernatural goings on. If he can believe it on screen then there's a fighting chance I'll believe it in my seat.

Two, director Christian Alvart has had an incredibly busy couple years. Since »
