Running Late

27 December 2009 9:51 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

As we wind down to year's end, we find Michael Haneke's Cannes conqueror fashionably late to the party, while Paramount waited three years to release the Renée Zellweger horror flick "Case 39" and a mere half-century later, audiences will finally see the fruits of an unproduced Tennessee Williams screenplay. Throw in a pair of modern Korean films and you've got yourself an exciting way to start the new year.

"Case 39"

We can only hope it's no reflection of quality that this latest volley from the creepy-kid subgenre sat on the shelf for so long that its director, Christian Alvart, had another project (daffy sci-fi chiller "Pandorum") wrapped, released and mostly ignored before this domestic thriller even made it to our shores. The German helmer's English-language debut (at least chronologically) has Renée Zellweger »

Tis the Season to be Thankful: A Contest

23 December 2009 4:33 PM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Here at 28Dla.com, I wanted to say thank-you to all the fans, readers, and supporters of independent horror filmmaking. Christmas is a time to be thankful for those we love and to spread the love let us celebrate with a horror contest. The contest has two questions, and one task. Some of the questions relate to the personalities who have graced the pages here at 28Dla.com and some have to do with horror filmmaking in general. First prize is your choice of the Feast III Unleashed on DVD from 2009, or an older title The Breed (2005) also on DVD. The legalese is as follows "any damage to the DVDs included in this contest that occurs in travel or by the manufacturer is not the responsibility of this site or those associated with this site." So here are the questions:

1) Travis Milloy was interviewed on this site September 3 about his film Pandorum. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Two

16 December 2009 3:18 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

A Soldier's Story

10 December 2009 11:03 AM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Some roles are hard to shake. Ben Foster ("3:10 to Yuma," "Alpha Dog," "Six Feet Under") found this out the hard way on a recent promotional tour for his new film "The Messenger." At Hunter Airfield Base in Georgia, he started experiencing severe leg pain from an injury he never suffered. His leg "froze up," he says. "I couldn't walk downstairs without limping. It was so strange." Foster plays a soldier recovering from leg and eye injuries after returning from Iraq. "The mind and the imagination are really curious places. I'm sure those things will drift. That's what we do" as actors, he says. "We allow ourselves to believe things. It's just an occupational hazard." He adds, "I definitely need a vacation soon."Foster's vacation will have to wait, as he is currently shooting a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson thriller "The Mechanic" with Jason Statham in New Orleans. And still, »

The wait is (supposedly) over come January 1st, 2010 when Paramount rings in the New Year with a new evil child movie. After sitting on the shelf for years now, the studio is hoping to release Case 39, which stars Renee Zellweger (lemons anyone?), Jodelle Ferland (the creepy kid from Silent Hill) and Bradley Cooper (the reason the movie is probably finally getting released - The Hangover). Below you can check out a whole new batch of stills from the film directed by Christian Alvart (Pandorum). It centers on an idealistic social worker (Zellweger) who saves an abused 10-year-old girl from her parents only to discover that things are not as they appear. »

Interview: Ben Foster Brings Humanity to ‘The Messenger’

19 November 2009 12:40 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Ben Foster has stolen scenes in works as diverse as “Six Feet Under,” “Freaks and Geeks,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and “Alpha Dog,” but he truly shines in the spotlight of the lead role in “The Messenger,” giving the best performance of his career to date. The young actor was in town for the Chicago International Film Festival and took some time to speak to us about his research for the film, how one leaves such a dramatic work behind, and his love for co-star Woody Harrelson.

Foster stars in “The Messenger” as Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery, a young man returned home from his tour but with a few months of service left. To fill out his time, Will is assigned to the Casualty Notification Office (and partnered with Woody Harrelson’s Captain Tony Stone), the men who inform “Nok” (next of kin) when their loved one has been killed in the line of duty. »

Pandorum (2009) Movie Review

10 November 2009 7:45 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Christian Alvart’s “Pandorum” is a creature feature horror film set in space. In that respect, the movie doesn’t really depend on its sci-fi elements in the least, and its premise could have been easily transplanted to any isolated location that requires a large group of people to be locked away from civilization. The grungy, dark spaceship interiors and its many winding, bulky corridors could easily have been swapped for an underground research base, for example. But hey, who’s complaining? It’s been a long time since sci-fi has looked this dark, gritty, and grungy. And of course, deadly. Set many years in the future, “Pandorum” stars Ben Foster as Bower, a crewman onboard the spaceship Elysium. Bower, along with fellow crewman Lieutenant Payton (Dennis Quaid), are tasked with ensuring that their ship’s cargo – humans in hypersleep — are successfully transported to a distant alien planet for colonization. »

Exclusive: Message of 'The Messenger' Hits Home

9 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

If you've been paying any attention to the news this past few days, then you know that last Thursday an Army psychiatrist fatally shot 12 people and wounded 31 at Fort Hood in Texas. Since the beginning of the Iraq invasion in 2003, 75 Fort Hood soldiers have killed themselves. Nine of them committed suicide this year. Moreover, Army suicides have increased by 37% since 2006. In light of recent events, the release of the film The Messenger, starring Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson, on November 13, could not be more timely.

The Messenger opens with Ben Foster (Pandorum, X-Men: The Last Stand, Alpha Dog) applying medicinal drops to one of his eyes. His character, Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery, has recently returned home from a tour of duty and one of his eyes was damaged during combat in Iraq. Other than a small scar beneath the eye, he shows no other outward physical injuries but, sullen and quick-tempered, »

The Week in Film: Halloween Weekend

Ho ho ho, Merry- wait, that’s not right. Gobble gobble! Happy Thanks- shoot, that’s not right either. Ahem. *evil high-pitched cackle* Happy Halloween! Ah, there we go. Sorry for the confusion there, folks. It happens when you try to get a Turkey Santa Claus costume for this special day. You get confused. For some reason, I couldn’t find one anywhere, but enough about me. And since it’s Halloween weekend, time for scary movies! Right?

Maybe not so much. At least not new ones, as it looks like Hollywood decided too many folks were going to be out trick-or-treating to check out a new movie this weekend. Fortunately or unfortunately, Saw VI came out last week and Paranormal Activity is still in theaters scaring up big bucks (more on that later).

First up this week, we have Michael Jackson’s sold out This Is It that opened on Wednesday. »
