Beyond the criminal and social anecdote, "El Libro Talonario" reflects an almost lost way of life: the "mayeto" as a man next to nature, which fights for his family sustenance in a land of bully rogues and corrupt landowners. Good production values and a clever focus on social issues makes this short-film an enjoyable piece of history. With his adaptation of an original short story by andalusian writer Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, newcomer Merat give us a remarkable first approach for new viewers to the same old Spanish country realm that attracted Hemingway and Welles, among others.A very promising beginning for director and screenwriter Gonzalo Merat, in an unusual Spanish production, with a classic appeal and a modern approach.
