Storyline

Sokol and Lorna, two Albanian emigrants in Belgium, dream of leaving their dreary jobs to set up a snack bar. They need money, and a permanent resident status. Claudy is a junkie - he needs money to satisfy his addiction. Andrei, the cigarette smuggler, must hold up for a while outside Russia; he has loads of money. Fabio, the Italian taxi driver and aspiring gang boss, elaborates a clever scheme: he will pay Claudy to marry Lorna so that she acquires a Belgian citizenship. Then she is to re-marry Andrei, who will in this way obtain the coveted EU passport - and pay a hefty price to Fabio and Lorna for the service. Like all plans, this one will not survive the contact with reality. Written by Eduardo Casais <casaise@acm.org>

Can Arta Dobroshi extricate herself from mounting difficulties?
3 June 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Silence of Lorna" (2008) is a French neo-noir. One essay on the latter notes that French neo-noirs have their own styles, occurring in waves. These categories are very rough and do not do justice to the variety and timing of different content, but they set the stage for understanding where a movie like "Lorna" fits. "Diva" (1981) and "Subway" (1985) are one style. Policiers like "Detective" (1985) and "Police" (1985) are another. Social issues are emphasized in the 90s as in Hate (1995). In the late 90s, violence is emphasized as in "Irreversible" and "I Stand Alone". Policiers return in the 2000s, with movies like "Feux Rouges" and "Le Petit Lieutenant".

Another wave has developed that emphasizes the lives and plights of people struggling at the margins or in the lower classes. This wave is European, not just French. The style is realism and not on big budgets. The movie feels like we are seeing real and unglamorized people. There is no Hollywood gloss. The streets, apartments, cars, offices and people all look real. The movie goes right into the life of its subjects, showing them via an objective scenario. There is no narration. We are immersed without exposition. We learn through brief snippets what's going on. Examples are "Slovenian Girl" (2009), Pusher (1996), Pusher 2 (2004) and Pusher 3 (2010), and "L'enfant" (2005). This is the kind of neo-noir that "The Silence of Lorna" is, and this type is very, very different from the other kinds of waves and from Hollywood products. The movie "Dirty Pretty Things" (2002), the one about the kidney transplant market, nods in this direction without fully going there. It has more of a gloss.

What hits us about these films are the people, with whom we feel sympathy. They face difficult situations and quandaries, sometimes becoming dramatically dangerous. They have to skirt the law and work around bureaucracies. The social milieu is important. They're often scrambling, conniving, working angles, hustling as best they can. If they are immigrants, they may have limited support systems. Their hopes and dreams are engaging. These are not bad people but they do run into some bad characters that can be dangerous.

"The Silence of Lorna" is a good one that has won awards. The story focuses on an Albanian immigrant (Arta Dobroshi) to Belgium who has obtained citizenship through a sham marriage to a drug addict (Jeremie Renier). She loves someone else, Alban Ukaj, and she wants to set up a business, a bar, with him. To get money, she is going to marry a Russian who wants citizenship. There is an intermediary who has arranged that, Fabrizio Rangione. What about her current husband? She wants to end that marriage through divorce by feigning that he beat her up. This doesn't suit Rangione who has more drastic and violent ideas. Meanwhile, Renier is making attempts to get off drugs and calling upon Dobroshi's help. Her feelings toward him are growing much more benign. The difficulties of Dobroshi mount up in a number of ways and we wonder if she can extricate herself.

This movie is really very, very good.
