How ‘Wonder’ Will Become the $150 Million Hit of the Christmas Box Office

How ‘Wonder’ Will Become the $150 Million Hit of the Christmas Box Office
Lionsgate’s “Wonder” made third place look sexy over Thanksgiving. After doubling predictions with $27.5 million on its opening weekend, it fell less than 18 percent on its second weekend— compared to the 56 percent drop for “Justice League” and 29 percent for “The Star,” the other two films that opened November 17. With $73 million domestic as of November 29, “Wonder” is fast approaching profit on a $20 million production budget.

In some key aspects, “Wonder” resembles “The Blind Side.” Both are based on feel-good best sellers (“Wonder” a novel, “The Blind Side” nonfiction) about young people who overcome school-year odds with the help of dedicated parental figures. Both films opened the weekend before Thanksgiving as counter-programming against a blockbuster (“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” then, “Justice League” here).

Singer/Actor Rain Pulls Out Of X-Men: Dark Phoenix; Leaked Audition Tape Points To The Shi’ar Empire

Filming on X-Men: Dark Phoenix is due to commence next month, that much we know, but one cast member that allegedly won’t be involved whatsoever is Rain, the South Korean singer and actor who became linked with an undisclosed role in the 20th Century Fox tentpole earlier this year.

First reported by South Korean outlet JoongAng Ilbo – and relayed to us by Newsarama – a scheduling conflict has now forced Rain to exit Dark Phoneix altogether. Best known on these shores for his performances across Speed Racer, Ninja Assassin and The Prince, the news was initially revealed by fellow actor Lee Beom Soo, who’s set to star alongside Rain in the upcoming Korean thriller, Uhm Bok-dong. It’s scheduled to film throughout the course of the summer, thereby clashing with Fox’s own production plan for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Not only that, but we understand that Rain is attached

Our Staff Picks: TV Shows to Watch the Week of May 1, 2017
Welcome back to Tune In: our weekly newsletter offering a guide to the best of the week’s TV.

Each week, Variety’s TV team combs through the week’s TV schedule, selecting our picks of what to watch and when/how to watch it. This week, “Superstore” and “Billions” wrap up their second seasons, while “Sense8” debuts its own second season after a two-year hiatus.

Superstore, NBC, Thursday, 8:30 (Critics’ Pick)

“Superstore” has been consistently delightful since it debuted, and the strong second season only solidified the impression that this comedy ensemble is both extremely talented and a little too underrated. A show this good shouldn’t fly under the radar so consistently, but it’s hard to escape the fact that there’s a lot of TV on right now. The half-hour realm is in an especially robust place, offering something for just about every taste, and if your preferences run to well-written, sharply

Interview: The Director of 'John Wick: Chapter 2' Talks Body Count, Metahumans, and What's Next

Chad Stahelski spent most of his career being the guy filmmakers swap in when a stunt is too complex - or life threatening - for their actors to perform. Can't hit your actual star with a car? Get Stahelski. An actor can't believably fight ten guys at once? Get Stahelski.  Stahelski became such a go-to secret weapon for action movies that he stepped up from stunt man to second unit director, overseeing the stunt-intensive action scenes on movies like The Hunger Games, Ninja Assassin and Captain America: Civil War. But in 2014 Stahelski and his longtime collaborator David Leitch stepped fully into the spotlight to direct John Wick. Audiences instantly fell in love with the result. So if you've been wondering why John Wick has such incredible...

Deepwater Horizon Trailer #2 Has Mark Wahlberg Fighting to Survive
This fall, Mark Wahlberg and his Lone Survivor director Peter Berg will team up again to showcase the heroism that was on display during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Back in March, we got the first trailer for this true story adaptation. Today, we have the second trailer, chocked full of even more action and drama, as we get ready for the September 30 release. If that wasn't enough, we also have character posters featuring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien and John Malkovich.

On April 20, 2010, the world's largest man-made disaster occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion killed 11 people and injured 17 others, with more than 200 million gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days. The oil spill affected the coastlines of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, with over 8,000 animals reportedly killed as a result of the spill.

‘Daredevil’ Season 2 Teaser: A Blind Superhero, a Ninja Assassin, and a Brutal Vigilante Walk Into Netflix…

Daredevil season 2 arrives on Netflix in a little over a week and I’m already planning to binge the entire thing in a sitting or two. After all, I’m still high over how much I enjoyed Jessica Jones and the early reviews for this new season suggest that everything that worked about about the first […]

Lee Byung Hun – Memories of the Sword (2015) Movie Review

Park Heung Shik’s Memories of the Sword is a historical film set in the Goryeo period of Korean history starring Lee Byung Hun (Red 2; The Good, the Bad, the Weird) , Jeon Do Yeon (The Shameless), Kim Go Eun (Monster) and Lee Jun Ho (2Pm member, Twenty).

This story of betrayal and retribution wasn’t told from the usual “revenge for pain” standpoint. Instead, retribution came in the form of repentance, which was as unexpected as it was oddly satisfying. Even though I know in my mind that these revenge stories are basically all the same, this one didn’t feel like the others. I had no idea what to expect all throughout the movie.

My assumptions of what was about to happen almost never came true. I felt like if I stopped anywhere in between that I would be left with an agonizing doubt that would gnaw at me until I finished this movie.

'Avengers 2': How Did They Bring Vision to Life? | Exclusive

Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced fans to several new characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but perhaps none were more unique than Vision. After portraying the voice of Tony Stark's A.I. assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. for years, Paul Bettany finally got a chance to shine in front of the camera, coming to life before our very eyes as Vision. Ahead of Avengers: Age of Ultron's debut on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD, I recently had a chance to speak with prosthetics supervisor Nik Williams, who helped bring Vision to life, designing the intricate makeup that Paul Bettany wore on set.

Nik Williams first got his start in animatronics, working on Little Shop of Horrors, How to Get Ahead in Advertising and Frankenstein throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He started working in prosthetics in the 2000s on Stardust, Eastern Promises and Ninja Assassin, while serving as

J. Michael Straczynski says viewers have evolved to be ready for 'Sense8'

J. Michael Straczynski says viewers have evolved to be ready for 'Sense8'
With its still-mostly-unique binge-centric approach to programming, Netflix is the sort of creative incubator that inspires writers to say that the story they're telling could only have been told at Netflix. That's not always true. It is, however, probably true when it comes to "Sense8," an almost description-proof sci-fi drama from "Babylon 5" creator J. Michael Straczynski and "Matrix" masterminds The Wachowskis. "You literally drop the audience into the middle of the story and because again we’re staying with subjective point of view, the audience only knows as much as the characters know," Straczynski tells me. "As the characters figure out over the course of the next X number of episodes what’s going on, like a mystery structure, the audience also figures it out. And we knew that that would be really, really difficult to pull off on a regular network." Nearly every piece of that quote may be an understatement.

Review: 'Survivor' Starring Milla Jovovich & Pierce Brosnan

There was a time when James McTeigue’s ascendance as a top tier blockbuster director seemed assured. After working with the Wachowskis on “The Matrix” trilogy as first assistant director, he made his debut feature with the smash hit “V For Vendetta,” which the siblings endorsed with a producing credit. But from there things took a decidedly downward turn. The next team up between the Wachowskis and McTeigue, “Ninja Assassin,” was a flop, and so too was his outing behind period pulp piece “The Raven.” And things continue in a downward trajectory with “Survivor,” a thriller that lines up decent actors for a credulity straining affair that aims to honor American law enforcement for stopping terrorist attacks post-9/11, but winds up trivializing their job in the process. Milla Jovovich leads the movie as Kate Abbott, a hot shot security expert brought in to help the American embassy in London look

It’s Jovovich Vs. Brosnan In First Trailer For Survivor

After squaring away a significant amount of Bond movies, Pierce Brosnan still can’t shake off the action. In his post-007 career, the actor has turned in a handful of standard shoot-em-up affairs, but none that are likely to stand the test of time in comparison to the world’s favorite secret agent. Bearing that in mind, will 2015 be Brosnan’s year to shine? It just may be, as he has another couple of actioners due for release, including No Escape and the subject of today’s trailer: Survivor.

Directed by James McTeigue (V For Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) the movie revolves around a Foreign Service Officer (Milla Jovovich). The target of a ruthless assassin (Brosnan) attempting to take her out for a terrorist hit she committed, she must avoid his deadly attempts, try to clear her name after being framed And stop the actual perpetrators of the attack.

'Survivor' Trailer Starring Milla Jovovich & Pierce Brosnan

'Survivor' Trailer Starring Milla Jovovich & Pierce Brosnan
Are you tired of seeing Pierce Brosnan as the heroic, handsome Mr. Niceguy? Then have we got a movie for you. In Survivor, the former Bond actor trades in his charming charisma for an evil grin as he chases down and tries to kill the unstoppable Milla Jovovich. Judging from the just released trailer, she might actually kill him first!

After being mysteriously framed for a terrorist bombing, a Foreign Service Officer (Milla Jovovich) must evade government capture and death by a ruthless assassin (Pierce Brosnan) in order to stop the real perpetrators' master, and much deadlier, plan. The film marks a rare villainous turn for Pierce Brosnan, who pulls out all the stops to capture his prey after chasing her throughout London. Milla Jovovich proves to be her usual self, capable of handling any dangerous situation that comes her way, evading capture as she tries to stop a plan that could kill hundred,

Watch: Pierce Brosnan Is Trying To Kill Milla Jovovich In First Trailer For 'Survivor'

Pierce Brosnan played James Bond from 1994 to 2005, so clearly he knows his way around action fare. Yet his latest attempts at trying to position himself as a Liam Neeson-esque aging action star haven't been working out. You probably already forgot about last year's "The November Man," and this coming summer he's got the pretty terrible looking "No Escape" with Owen Wilson, but first is "Survivor" which I didn't even know existed, and a new trailer has arrived. James McTeigue ("V For Vendetta," "Ninja Assassin") directs this film about a Foreign Service Officer who is targeted by a ruthless assassin while trying to clear his name after being framed for a terrorist bombing and to stop the real bad guys' actual plan. That sounds exhausting. Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett and Robert Forster also feature in this movie that has no shortage of electronic gadgets and actors looking aghast. "Survivor" arrives in theaters.

Milla Jovovich Runs from Pierce Brosnan in 'Survivor' Thriller Trailer

"If you get her in your sight, do no hesitate." Pierce Brosnan took the hero role in last year's action thriller The November Man, but this year he's in villain mode for a new action thriller called Survivor. This time it's Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) on the run as she's being framed for a terrorist bombing that Brosnan's infamous assassin character executed. It seems like a pretty generic plot, but Brosnan is doing some pretty slick stuff in this trailer. In fact, he seems to get more screentime than Jovovich, which doesn't really seem fair to the actress, but Brosnan is a James Bond veteran, so he'll help sell the movie too. Watch? Here's the first trailer for James McTeigue's Survivor, originally from Yahoo: Survivor is directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin, The Invasion, The Raven) and written by Philip Shelby (Mechanic: Resurrection). After being mysteriously framed for a terrorist bombing,

Watch: Pierce Brosnan is Out for Milla Jovovich in Trailer for 'Survivor'

Remember James McTeigue, director of V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin and The Ravenc Well, it appears his career continues its steady slide as he has now directed a movie I didn't even know existed until a few minutes ago, which is a bit of a curiousity considering the cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Milla Jovovich, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett and Robert Forster. The movie is Survivor and it centers on a Foreign Service Officer (Jovovich), who must evade government capture and death by a ruthless assassin (Pierce Brosnan) in order to stop the real perpetrator of a terrorist bombing she is being framed for. Alchemy will release Survivor in theaters and on demand on May 29 and just below is the first trailer if you're interested in checking it out.

Kingsman: Bond with a Gangster Swag (Featuring Brad Allen “Gorgeous”)

Kingsman: the Secret Service is the fifth directorial effort from director Matthew Vaughan and yet another film that I thoroughly enjoyed. I should mention that I have been a fan of Mark Vaughan’s work since Layer Cake, one of my favorite British gangster movies and Vaughan’s first feature. So I admit I’m a little biased, I loved Kick Ass, I really loved X-Men: First Class, and I was so excited when I heard about this film. Yes, I know I left out Stardust, yes, it’s because I really didn’t like it.

Based on yet another comic by Mark Millar, Kingsman is a breathtaking re-imagination of the whole British spy genre…and then some. Interestingly enough this is not the first Mark Millar project Vaughan has helmed, the first being Kick –Ass 1 (the better one). Vaughan is also credited as “co-plotter” on The Secret Service, the

Korean TV Hit ‘Full House’ to Be Remade in China

Korean TV Hit ‘Full House’ to Be Remade in China
Full House,” the 2004 TV drama that made stars of Korean singer Rain and actress Song Hye-kyo, is to get a Chinese-language remake.

The show is to be produced by Korea’s Group Eight and Asia Media Holding. Korean producer Lee Min-cheol is to direct, while Jeon Gyu-ah is among the Korean producers.

The Chinese show will star Eli, a Mandarin-speaking K-pop star from the Korean six-member music act U-Kiss.

The original show, itself adapted from a romantic graphic novel of the same title, played for 16 episodes on Kbs and presented a testy three-way love triangle involving a screenwriter, an actor and a jilted friend, a home that should not have been sold off and a fake marriage that surprisingly blossomed.

The producers did not announce the female lead who would take the role originally played by Song. Filming is expected to begin in December with broadcast in 2015.

Review: Keanu Reeves shoots all the faces in the preposterous pulpy 'John Wick'

Review: Keanu Reeves shoots all the faces in the preposterous pulpy 'John Wick'
Austin - When the lights went down in the theater for the Fantastic Fest debut of "John Wick," I had no expectations at all for the film. It never occurred to me that it would end up being one of the most enjoyable things I saw there and a genuinely exciting announcement for a pair of pulp action filmmakers. Chad Stahelski was the stuntman who doubled for Keanu Reeves on "The Matrix," and since then, he's done "The Replacements," both "Matrix" sequels, "Thumbsucker," "Constantine," and "Man Of Tai Chi" with Reeves, and they've developed a strong collaborative relationship. David Leitch, who co-directed the film with Stahelski, has worked on dozens of movies with him in the stunt department. They've both worked as second-unit actual unit directors on films like "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Escape Plan," "Safe," "The Wolverine," Parker," "Ninja Assassin," and the upcoming "Jurassic World." The two of
