I would have enjoyed it more if I cared about the characters...
13 July 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

It's customary to have characters that the audience can get behind and root for, especially in survival films. If your characters aren't likable, then why should we care if they live or die? This movie is based on a true story of what happened to a young couple in 2005. The writer, producers and director felt the need to change some background information about the characters and made them so unlikable in the film, that my heart towards them was just as cold as the snow coming down on top of them.

Ryan (Martz) and Shelley (Goodman) are dating. Ryan cheated on and then left his wife, Jeanette (Huff) and their baby to be with Shelley. Shelley cheated on and left her boyfriend, Keith (Harris) to be with Ryan. Jeanette constantly calls Ryan and he adamantly refuses to take her calls (nice thing to do when you have a child with the woman) and Shelley's broken Keith's heart so bad, he commits suicide right in front of her. Already, we can tell that these two people aren't exactly going to be voted Most Popular. Ryan's roommate, Wade (Bennett) tells them of a party over at Nathon's (Littlefield), which is a long drive away. They go to the party and leave before the snowfall gets too bad. They try to convince them to stay but they decide to leave anyway. On their way home, they crash into a snowbank and have to call 911 for assistance. The new deputy, Bruce (Meyer), who used to date Shelley back in the day and is still in love with her, gets the call and starts searching for them. Shelley's alcoholic, pill-popping mother, Gayle (Rogers) and her old boyfriend, Larry (Starzyk), who has a police scanner and a tow truck, head up their own rescue mission.

I almost turned the movie off when the couple got back in the car and headed back home from the party. Goodman's acting was so over-the-top and manic, that it threw me off and made me think: "No sane person would ever act like this. This is stupid, uncalled for and highly unlikely." It wasn't until the filmmakers filled us in with what happened at the party that I forgave Cameron Goodman's performance. But, it was in that exact same moment that I started hating her's and Martz's characters. Having zero sympathy for Ryan and Shelley and a could-care-less attitude, I had to force myself to finish the movie to find out what happened to the lovers.

The acting is sub-par in Frozen Kiss, with Mimi Rogers giving the film's best performance as a mother who is angry, depressed, lonely and hopeful, all at the same time. Most of my problem with the movie lies within all the silly side stories that they use as filler for the main story and the fact that Ryan and Shelley were just too unlikable. If you want to hear about the true life couple that this happened to back in 2005, you can click here (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Primetime/story?id=549455&page=1) and read about it -- but, fair warning, it will give away the entire story.
