Julie Benz on Playing Defiance's 'Badass' Mayor: Not Being 'The Sexy One' Is Definitely Fun

14 April 2013 4:35 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Can’t we all just get along?

That question is raised by Syfy’s Defiance, premiering Monday at 9/8c and presenting a 2046 Earth that has received an extreme makeover via terraforming and the colonization by seven alien races (collectively dubbed Votans).

The title refers to the St. Louis-adjacent town where humans coexist alongside milky-skinned and aristocratic Castithans (fronted by Tony Curran and Warehouse 13′s Jaime Murray as Datak and Stahma Tarr), Steampunky Irathients, bulging Biomen, the vicious Volge and other species.

Phil Davis: the unsung hero of British character acting

12 March 2013 5:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Triple Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis has cited the vanity-free actor Phil Davis as a key inspiration, alongside Brando and Streep. Is it time the star of Quadrophenia and Whitechapel was recognised as a British acting great?

Phil Davis calls himself "the nose-and-teeth man". He says he sometimes looks in the mirror and thinks: "Look at that tired old boat race." And it's true that, with his pink skin, squinting eyes and shock of vanilla hair, there is something of the naked mole rat about him.

But this week the largely unsung hero of British screen acting was cited by Daniel Day-Lewis as one of the biggest influences on his career. In an article for Port magazine, Day-Lewis ranked Davis alongside Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep and Marlon Brando: the actor's 1977 turn in Gotcha, he wrote, had made a "deep impression". Day-Lewis has won three Oscars (Lincoln, There Will Be Blood, »

BBC One is to strip new five-part drama Mayday across a single week.

The thriller series stars Sophie Okonedo (The Slap), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), Peter Firth (Spooks) and Lesley Manville (Cranford).

Penned by Whitechapel writing duo Ben Court and Caroline Ip, Mayday tells the story of a missing teenager and the hunt for the abductor, told through the eyes of a close-knit community.

"I am very excited that they are screening Mayday over five days," said star Okonedo. "I think it will suit the piece enormously.

"It has a lot of twists and turns and things are not always as they seem. The reality is often heightened with a cliffhanger at the end of every episode."

Mayday has been directed by Black Mirror's Brian Welsh and produced by Chris Fry (Spooks).

The series premiere on Sunday, March 3 on BBC One.

Socha agreed, saying: "Essentially they are best friends... but it really does get tested in this series."

Whitechapel's Phil Davis will play new villain Captain Hatch, and revealed that he was attracted to Being Human by its combination of "gory horror and very hip, funny badinage".
