As this episode opens Tayler, a young girl, takes her dog for a walk;
it runs off and goes through an anomaly in a pipe. Tayler follows and
finds herself in a prehistoric desert. Back at ARC the anomaly detector
sounds then crashes before it can be located; when it restarts there is
no sign of it. Connor is convinced that it is working properly so
checks the code and discovered it has been hacked and somebody else has
the data. That somebody is Oliver Leek and he is sending a trio of
mercenaries through the anomaly; they see Tayler in the distance but
ignore her shouts as they 'aren't social workers'
this is a fatal
mistake as she is trying to warn them to get to the rocks before
creatures in the sand kill them! With the device fixed Nick and Stephen
go to the anomaly and find Tayler. The anomaly closes before they can
return but soon after another appears
if they are get to it they will
have to evade giant burrowing scorpions, sit out a sandstorm and deal
with a survivor from Leek's goons. Meanwhile Connor is planned to end
his relationship with Caroline; Abby tells him he can't do it by text;
but he does it anyway leading to her taking it out on poor Rex.
This was a fairly exciting episode; it made a nice change to have most of the action take place on the other side of an anomaly rather than having creatures from other eras entering our time. The fact that the creatures attacked from under the sand made them more menacing as for much of the episode we have no idea what they look like; we only see movement in the sand and parts of the creatures in earlier scenes. While these creatures were pretty scary they weren't as unpleasant as 'The Cleaner'; at least they are just creatures looking for a meal. There is still little clue what Leek is trying to do that can't be revealed to other members of ARC. Some humour is added to the episode by having Jenny turn up dressed for her engagement party and Connor's gauche dumping of Caroline his behaviour is pretty appalling but since we know that Caroline is using him it is hard to feel any sympathy for her. As usually the regular cast goes a solid job and Mabel Rogers, the young guest star, impresses as Tayler; she could so easily have been an annoying character but instead she made her likable and believable in the context of a show where people confront prehistoric creatures on a weekly basis. Overall I found this to be a good episode.
While walking in drainage pipe Taylor and her dog fall through anomaly. Having the power to know where anomaly will open, Oliver Leek sends his soldiers through. When they arrive it is night and they are in land that looks like desert. After they noticed Taylor who is standing on some rocks too far from them to hear what she is yelling to them, they are killed by enormous looking scorpions. When Nick and Stephen pass through anomaly it is day and they find the evidence of a fight the night before. In the distance Stephen notices a little girl standing on rocks and signaling to them with her arms in the air. When they start to walk toward her, they are being chased by scorpion looking creature. When they manage to climb the rocks unharmed, Taylor tells them that they were right to listen to her and if those man before them who came did the same they would be alive. James Lester is still at his usual insensitive mood and treats the team with no respect. Maybie that is the reason why his aid Oliver Leek joined forces with Helen Cuter and does her dirty work for her. In the beginning of the episode Jenny comes too dressed for the job, because she got away from her own engagement party. And yet Nick does not appear to be jealous at all, by now he knows that this Jenny is not Claudia. Back in the desert the little girl refused any help from Stephen, since her ankle was twisted. Her behavior, acting tough and like "I know it all" was not cute for me. I had no sympathy for the little girl. In the desert Nick and Stephen faced danger together and frankly the desert scenes were the best ones in this episode. The special effects were amazing.
