Flying on One Wing had its World Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. This film is the story of the unusual Indian-American plastic surgeon Sharakumar Dicksheet who at 77-years-old and despite serious physical health problems he continues to travel to India each year where he performs thousands of cleft lip operations on Indian children. The operations that he performs are relatively simple, but they have the power to transform lives of these children, who without them are often virtual outcasts. He has performed well over 100,000 of these operations.
This beautifully-made heart-warming film is inspiring, because it shows a man overcoming his own serious physical infirmities to help others. It is a great lesson in how both the aged and the disabled - two groups whose abilities are so often discounted by society - can continue to make significant - in this case, amazing - contributions to our world.
Dr. Dicksheet is also quite a character. He's is clearly curmudgeon, but one with a true heart of gold. This wonderful film presents the story of his previously, almost untold and indeed nearly saintly, work to heal the sick. This film deserves a wider audience if for no reason than to help Dr. Dicksheet raise the resources to continue his work. Just as important, we all need to see what one person can accomplish. Dr. Dicksheet sets a high bar that we should all aspire to reach.
There is a Kabbalistic legend that there are 36 hidden righteous individuals in the world and if not for their righteousness the world would be destroyed. Because of these righteous people, the God preserves the world despite the depravity of much of humanity. Personally, I think in Dr. Dicksheet qualifies as one of these hidden saints of our times.
