A Fantastic Family Drama...
31 July 2010 | by (Australia) – See all my reviews

Welcome to the Riley's was a very interesting little American indy film.

Directed by Jake Scott (son of Ridley Scott), Welcome to the Riley's follows the story of Doug (played by James Gandolfini) and his attempt to heal his broken heart after the death of his teenage daughter.

Aspects of it's story were quite unique and original which is hard to find in a film these days. It is a very character driven story, and as they evolve and develop throughout the film, different events and obstacles arise to challenge these characters which brings an often dark, humorous but most of all engaging premise to the film.

The acting is fantastic. James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano from the 'Soprano's') as Doug is brilliant and really captures this troubled character as he seeks to mend his broken and shattered heart.

Kirstin Stewart breaks away from her Twilight role well. I was very impressed with her performance as the "wrong-side-of-the-tracks" girl who has lost her way in life. Mellisa Leo was good as Doug's wife, Lois, as well.

Overall a fantastic family drama film, with a great story and great characters.
