The film is the first studio production to adopt green filmmaking initiatives aimed to reduce CO2 emission. Garbage was reduced by half, thanks to the various bins for recyclable material. Caterers used ceramic and washed dishes as opposed to throwaway products. Vehicles on the set used biodiesel fuel.
For the brief oral sex scene, Maya Rudolph wore four pairs of biking shorts under the gown.
This is first Sam Mendes film where Thomas Newman did not compose the original score. Newman has scored every Mendes film since American Beauty (1999).
Toni Collette dropped out due scheduling conflicts. Maggie Gyllenhaal took over her role.

Jim Gaffigan who plays Lowell in the film is a stand up comedian who often tells a joke about the fact that the male seahorses give birth, saying that a stubborn scientist incorrectly identified the male so he when questioned he said that the males have the babies. In the film Roderick mentions that he loves seahorses because the males have the babies and wishes he could give birth to LN's babies.

Melanie Lynskey, who plays Munch in the film, made her screen debut in Heavenly Creatures (1994) with Kate Winslet. Winslet was later married to the film's director, Sam Mendes from 2003 to 2010.

As of 2017, This is the only Sam Mendes film not to have a bittersweet ending where a pivotal character dies at the end. In this film, no-one dies and the ending where Burt and Verona find a home has an entirely happy tone.
