Yogi Steals The Show!
1 June 2008 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

It's been so long since I watched an episode of this TV program, I had forgotten it was divided into three seven-minute cartoons. In other words, it's not a 25-minute Huckleberry Hound cartoon, which is too bad. However, in this opening episode, it was Yogi Bear who stole the show with, by far, the best of three cartoons, which were as follows:

Yogi Bear's Big Break - We learn that Yogi is a member of Jellystone National Park but would rather be free on the outside world. So, with that premise, we see Yogi attempting almost a dozen things in an attempt to get out of the park, from pole vaulting the wall to disguises to underground tunnels, you name it. It reminded me of Wily Coyote cartoons in which he attempts numerous things with the same goal in mind. Of course, all of them were unsuccessful for the coyote but Yogi actually succeeds in his last attempt. However, the poor bear finds out it's the first day of hunting season so he's safer back at the park!

Although not laugh-out-loud funny, it was humorous and clever enough to be an enjoyable cartoon.

Cousin Tex - I have no recollection of "Pixie & Dixie." This story was right out of the pages of an older cartoon: a Tom & Jerry, I believe, maybe something else. Anyway, it's the familiar mice vs. cats cartoon. Pixie and Dixie are two mice who live with Jinx, the cat. The mice invite their cousin, from Texas, to deal with the cat and, of course, the cat takes a horrendous beating. Ho hum - old stuff.

The final cartoon of the episode is the title character, Huckleberry Hound. He's a PO - lice - man, accent on the "PO," and his assignment is to capture "Wee Willie," a 300-pound chimp on the loose in the city. What's weird is that there isn't a soul in the city but H.H. and the ape. Where is everyone else? "Willie" is valuable property so H.H. is told to take it easy with him. Yeah, you can guess - the opposite happens.

Basically, the show - at least this first episode - looks geared for little kids. Well, at least I got a little taste of nostalgia.
