Kevin Costner’s career arc may be the great American story of redemption.
What began with a surge of notoriety and acclaim with titles like 1989′s “Field of Dreams” and continuing into the onset of the 1990′s with starring turns in flicks like “Dances with Wolves”, “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”, and “The Bodyguard”, Costner’s star was on the rise.
But what started as so-promising a career, quickly derailed in the mid-nineties with what may still be one of the biggest box-office bombs in Hollywood history. One that even now nearly twenty years later, is not easily forgotten.
The stains of 1995′s “Waterworld” still are hard to rinse away. That, and the opening scene of Costner drinking his own urine, apparently filtered through some type of “purification” system, left bad tastes in everyone’s mouth who bore witness to this maritime disaster.
“Waterworld” was an immediate stinker, and the »

Thoughts by Tsr: I’ll say up front that I know very little about Tracy Letts’ Broadway play of the same name. I was a big fan of the adaptations of Bug and Killer Joe, but the only thing that’s been drawing me to August: Osage County is the cast. Ideally the trailer would have arrived and given numerous other reasons to be excited. Unfortunately, beyond the cast I still don’t feel like this is something I have to rush out to see. Don’t get me wrong, it looks perfectly fine. I’m just not sure what the hook is.
Meryl Streep, as is usually the case, stands out the most. While I can’t say I love the voice she’s putting on, »

Coming to theaters November 8, here’s the first trailer for August: Osage County. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning play by Tracy Letts, and directed by John Wells (“Shameless”, The Company Men). Stars Meryl Streep as pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston and Julia Roberts as her complicated adult daughter Barbara.
Along with some of the male leads, definite nods for Roberts and Streep. But is there a 4th Oscar in store for Meryl? And does Julia find herself in the Best Supporting category? We’ll know for sure how the Weinstein Company’s film fares when the nominations are announced Thursday, January 16, 2014.
August: Osage County tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. »

It’s never too early for Oscar! Proof is the first trailer for director John Wells’ (The Company Men) adaptation of the Pulitzer and Tony-winning play August: Osage County by Tracy Letts who also wrote the screenplay version of this one. The all-star cast of August: Osage County includes Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Chris Cooper, Sam Shepard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin, Dermot Mulroney and Margo Martindale. The trailer does a great job of teasing the film’s ensemble cast, which is ferociously good. John Wells’ August: Osage County, the adaptation of Tracy Letts’ award-winning play, is pretty much guaranteed to be an Oscar contender come awards season at the year’s end.
The film features one of the greatest casts of the year, led by Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Ewan McGregor. Original playwright Letts has adapted his own play for the big screen. And George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Harvey Weinstein all serve as producers.
With the buzz already surrounding the project, its first trailer has been released, giving us a brilliant first look at the film.

Let's face it, it sucks when people die. Except sometimes in the movie, because then it gives filmmakers an opportunity to put together an amazing ensemble cast for one of those big family dramas where everyone comes together and their shared grief causes them all to say a bunch of stuff nobody should probably say out loud.
Like, for instance, in the new Yahoo! trailer for "August: Osage County."
Hey, if someone has to die to give us a new Meryl Streep movie, then so be it.
Directed by John Wells, the force behind 2010's acclaimed drama "The Company Men," "August: Osage County" is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Tracy Letts. It tells the story of a woman (that's Streep) coming to terms with the fact that her husband committed suicide.
That process is made significantly more complicated by the menagerie of family »

The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for director John Wells’ (The Company Men) adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning play August: Osage County. The story follows the women of a family whose lives have splintered in many directions until a crisis bring them back to their childhood home and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. While a bit lighter in tone than the actual story, this trailer does a swell job of teasing the film’s absolutely terrific ensemble cast, led by a characteristically great Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in what could potentially be her best role in years. Given the talent involved both onscreen and behind the scenes (Argo's George Clooney and Grant Heslov produce), this thing is a surefire Oscar contender that also promises delectable interplay amongst the film’s incredible ensemble. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Ewan McGregor, »

The Weinstein Company are aiming for Oscar gold with "August: Osage Country," a much-buzzed about film adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize-winning 2007 play (Letts also adapted his plays "Bug" and "Killer Joe" for the big screen). With a remarkable cast that includes Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts (as mother and daughter), the film -- written by Letts and directed by "The Company Men" helmer John Wells -- is a darkly comic family saga set in Oklahoma. Gearing up for a November 8 release in the heat of awards season, The Weinstein Company has released the first trailer for the drama, offering you your first peek at Streep and Roberts in action, in addition to the film's remarkable supporting cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Juliette Lewis, Benedict Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin, Chris Cooper, Sam Shepard and Dermot Mulroney, all in great form. With a cast including Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep, it’s hard not to at least be intrigued at the prospects of the upcoming adaptation of Tracy Letts‘ August: Osage County. It’s quite clear that Bradley Cooper is a very popular guy. Coming off a Best Actor nomination for his work in last year’s Silver Linings Playbook, the actor has been courted for a number of projects. He’s currently filming another movie with Slp director David O. Russell called American Hustle, he’ll star in Cameron Crowe’s next film, and he recently flirted with filling a vacated role in the troubled Western Jane Got a Gun before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts. Now Cooper has added another project to his slate, as the long-gestating drama Chef has finally landed a director by way of ER veteran and The Company Men helmer John Wells. Hit the jump for more, including how Cooper’s incredibly busy schedule will play out over the next year. Cooper has been developing Chef as a starring vehicle for some time, and the »

Being an Oscar prognosticator for over a half decade now, I’ve developed some odd habits. One of the things that I do that I know makes people question my sanity is posting my Oscar predictions for the another season as soon as the previous one has ended. I like getting a jump on things and actually started organizing contenders for the 2014 show a few months ago, but unless you’re as hardcore a film junkie as me, that’s crazy-talk.
My super-early predictions are hit and miss, though last year I’m proud to say that I was one of the first to predict Argo and also had three other eventual Best Picture nominees in my initial predix (Django Unchained, Lincoln, and Zero Dark Thirty, in case you were wondering). That being said, I also had The Dark Knight Rises, and that wound up being shut out. »

Thanks to Richard Gere and the financial crisis, the Sundance Film Festival is returning to its indie roots this year. The festival, which starts Thursday, has long served as a launching pad for smaller movies, as it did last year in catapulting "Beasts of the Southern Wild" to four Oscar nominations. However, as the festival has grown in stature, it also has craved big-ticket movies with brand-name stars, from John Wells' "The Company Men" (Ben Affleck and a reported $15 million budget) to Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" (Richard Gere and a $17 »

Two thousand and twelve is over and it's on to the new year and while I'm busy preparing a list of 50 films I'm anticipating in 2013, I got to thinking it might be fun to also prepare a list of books, articles, plays, graphic novels, comics and more for you to read to prepare for the year's new films and I've come up with a total of 35 of them (give or take, considering some are based on comic book series and/or characters from novels). Today I am introducing Part One of the list, which includes the comic books, graphic novels, news articles and plays that were adapted into films while tomorrow I will feature over 25 books that were adapted into movies that will be hitting theaters this year. I have written a few words on each as well as links to purchase all of the titles available as well as »
