RedOne might not be the most recognizable name in music - but he's responsible for some of the biggest Top 40 hits of the century. Born Nadir Khayat in Morocco in 1972, RedOne began producing and songwriting music in 1998. By 2006, he scored Billboard hits like Kat DeLuna's summer jam "Whine Up." But it wasn't until he teamed up with Lady Gaga that he became a go-to hitmaker in Hollywood. RedOne co-wrote and produced most of Gaga's earliest hits, from breakouts "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" to "LoveGame." Now 44 and with three Grammys to his name, RedOne has produced hits for everyone in the industry, »

Ellen Page Kidnaps a Baby in First Trailer For ‘Tallulah’

29 June 2016 11:57 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Recurring Orange Is The New Black writer Sian Heder is making her feature-length directorial debut after two short films with the Netflix-distributed Tallulah. Following a premiere at Sundance, the first trailer shows the struggle of the titular Tallulah (Ellen Page), a down-on-her-luck young woman who stumbles upon a nannying gig that sends her on unforgettable (or maybe very forgettable) journey. Oh, and she sorta kidnaps the baby and pretends it’s her own in order to get money from her missing boyfriend’s mother — but don’t worry, it’s inspirational when you put sad music over it.

We said in our review: “The light tone works well enough on its own, but suffers against the contrasting police investigation, a constant reminder that our lead’s new-found motherhood (also fodder for much comedy) has come at an awful price. Though this dichotomy is of clear intention by all involved, these »

[Tribeca Review] Pistol Shrimps

27 April 2016 7:02 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Returning to the form of feature-length documentary to chronicle a subculture and the people that take pleasure in it, Brent Hodge’s third feature The Pistol Shrimps follows a recreational basketball team with a starting line-up that includes comediennes Aubrey Plaza and Molly Hawkey. The Shrimps, started as an impromptu team, inspired the league to grow into something somewhat serious — the team is even required to hold practices now. Oddly the team and the league inspire a podcast (Pistol Shrimp Radio) hosted by Matt Gourley and Mark McConville mixing alt comedy, geeky fandom and sports talk radio as the men become experts on all things Pistol Shrimps. This of course requires more energy, dedication and mental bandwidth than most men would have and, although they’re not the focus, their passion is reminiscent of the men that love My Little Pony, the subject of Hodge’s first feature A Brony Tale. »

Screenwriter and director Lorene Scafaria has tended to mix high concepts with comedic material about critical junctures in young lives, with pictures such as “Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” “Whip It,” and “Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World.” But in the upcoming "The Meddler," there is no quirky adolescents, roller rink battles, or uh, apocalypses, and the result is a low-key charmer. 4 February 2016 7:00 AM, PST | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

David Bowie.  Thin White Duke, Goblin King, Ziggy Stardust, Genius.  The world was shocked by his death, so soon after gifting us with his album, Blackstar.  Released only days ago on his 69th birthday and intended as a parting gift to us all, David Bowie was wonderful, weird, and surprising until the very end.

While there’s no denying the musical talent Bowie brought to generations through his many albums and character incarnations, the film world has also lost a charismatic actor known for some iconic roles.  While Bowie may not have worked steadily as an actor, his roles were carefully chosen and memorable, allowing him to work with some of the most talented directors of the past 40 years.

Whether Bowie is the Goblin King, a beautiful androgynous alien, or the master of the fashion catwalk to you, we look back and celebrate his most iconic performances in film.

The Oscar-nominated Juno star talks about child stardom, her Vice TV show and why she had to stop living a lie

Within a few minutes of meeting the actor Ellen Page near her Los Angeles home, we’re talking about what she enjoys doing around here, which is going surfing with her girlfriend, artist Samantha Thomas. She likes to watch Thomas, the more experienced surfer, examine the waves. Thomas tells her which way to turn, based on movements in the water that Page can’t even see. “Particularly on days where there are onshore winds, so it’s kind of rough, she’ll say, ‘Oh, a wave’s coming at you, it’s a right, go right’ and I’m just like, ‘What are you looking at? You can read the ocean like that?’ It’s really hot,” she adds, the excitement in her gentle voice suggesting that she is quietly, »
