First Trailer for Barbershop: The Next Cut Tackles Humor and Gang Violence

9 hours ago | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

It's been a decade since the last Barbershop hit theaters, but the whole crew is back for a new outing that's about more than saving their shop this time around: it's about saving their neighborhood.  Come inside to check it out!

Sure, the Barbershop films aren't for everyone, but they certainly cracked me up when they released.  More than just humor, the films provided a unique look at the culture and approached genuine issues in their own way.  Based off of this first trailer for Barbershop: The Next Cut, they're looking to do the same thing once again:

Gang violence is a problem, and has been for a while.  It's a tough subject to broach in a comedy, but I'm digging the way it's being handled so far.  Let's hope they manage to keep it going for the full film.

It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. »

Tiff Review: Lorene Scafaria's 'The Meddler' Starring Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne & J.K. Simmons

15 September 2015 7:15 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

As a screenwriter and director, Lorene Scafaria has shown an interest in characters at critical life crossroads. “Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist” and “Whip It” explored young people finding love and their identity, while the filmmaker looked at middle age concerns through the lens of a genre film with “Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World.” And now comes “The Meddler,” featuring her oldest protagonist yet, a widowed woman starting life anew in Los Angeles, where she moves to be closer to her daughter. And while slight, the film’s genuine feeling and overall comedic consistency has enough breezy charm to make it go down easy and pleasurably. The whirling center of the movie is Marnie (Susan Sarandon), a recent New Jersey transplant to the west coast, who is adjusting to life in The Grove. The death of her husband Joe still looms in the background, but »

Glee Recap: Kissing Cousins

23 January 2015 6:59 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Friday’s Glee was a veritable ‘shipping delight for those invested in “Klaine” and “Samchel” — depending, of course, on which sides of those ‘ships you sail.

For example, if you find the concept of Sam and Rachel to be utterly revolting, there’s a good chance you’re still cleaning up the mess from your hour-long projectile vomit sesh. But if you’re all for Rachel testing the waters with Mr. Evans, this week’s Glee — from the duo’s performance of “A Thousand Miles” to that gasp-worthy lip lock — probably went down real smooth.

Of course, the fact that »

Showcase of new work by international women filmmakers to end after 10 years due to financial pressures.

The Birds Eye View Film Festival will cease from this year after nine annual editions. Over a decade of activity, the showcase of films by international women directors included the UK premieres of features from Drew Barrymore (Whip It), Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture) and Kim Longinotto (Sisters In Law) among others.

The festival, which ran in April, also provided development to more than 30 female screenwriters through three Labs and commissioned over 30 female musicians through Sound & Silents to compose and perform new live scores to silent films celebrating the contribution of pioneer women filmmakers from the beginning of cinema.

Founder Rachel Millward said financial pressures had led to the demise of the festival. “I am proud that the Birds Eye View Film Festival has been such a dynamic part of the conversation around women filmmakers over the last decade,” said Millward »
