For years, Warner Bros. has been exhausting itself trying to come up with ways to make a sequel to its 2007 hit I Am Legend, despite the unwillingness of star Will Smith to return for a follow-up. Now, it appears that the studio has finally found a way to turn the post-apocalyptic tale into a new franchise – thanks to a spec script written by a former Apple employee.
Gary Graham wrote A Garden At The End Of The World, described as a “sci-fi version of The Searchers,” while working at an Apple store in midtown Manhattan. After he posted the spec script on the Black List website, CAA and manager Brooklyn Weaver came across it and promptly signed him, sending the script around Hollywood.

Warner Bros has given up trying to make a sequel or prequel to the Will Smith-headlined I Am Legend. It's going for a reboot instead.
This story contains - or implies at least - a spoiler for I Am Legend.
It's been just six years since the Will Smith-headlined take on I Am Legend proved to be a monster hit in cinemas. Since then, Warner Bros has been dabbled with how to make a sequel to the film which, er, isn't narratively the easiest thing to do given what happens in the first movie. At one stage it was going down the prequel route, but it couldn't find a way to make it work.
So it's hatched a new plan: it's going for a reboot. Hurray.
A new take on I Am Legend is being put together, using as its basis a screenplay for a film that was »
Warner Bros. has long tried to find a way to make I Am Legend 2 work, but could never quite crack the story. Now, they've completely given up on a sequel, and instead are rebooting the movie without Will Smith's involvement in the hopes of launching a whole new franchise.
Warner Bros. believes it has found a way to continue on using the I Am Legend brand without the star, who has been reluctant to commit to sequels outside of the Men In Black franchise. They plan to take a spec script they recently acquired titled A Garden at the End of the World and retrofit it so that it falls in line with the story of the last man on earth. The screenplay was bought back in April from Gary Graham, who was working at an Apple store in Manhattan when he published the script on the Black List website. »
Shall we play another game? Not that we have much of a choice – MGM is moving full steam ahead with a remake of the 1983 cult classic WarGames.
Dean Israelite, who made his feature directorial debut on next January’s anticipated sci-fi Project Almanac, is in final negotiations to helm the film for MGM. He’s been the top contender for a few months, ever since Seth Gordons stepped away from the project. Additionally, we’ve learned that The Fault in Our Stars and Mud breakouts Ansel Elgort and Tye Sheridan (respectively) are currently atop MGM’s shortlist to lead the movie.
Both actors are highly in demand at the moment. Elgort is currently filming Divergent sequel Insurgent for Summit Entertainment, and he also recently locked down the starring role in Cold War-set biopic Van Cliburn. And for his part, Sheridan has upcoming films Grass Stains, Dark Places, The Forger and »

Back in 2007, I Am Legend – starring Will Smith – proved to be a huge hit after grossing over $585 million worldwide. That success obviously led to talk of a sequel, but for whatever reason, it just never happened (despite numerous reports to the contrary).
Co-writer and producer Akiva Goldsman recently sat down with io9 to talk about his upcoming adaptation of Mark Helprin’s 1983 novel, Winter’s Tale, and the subject of a follow-up to I Am Legend quickly came up. After quite clearly stating that there was “never” talk of an I Am Legend 2, he added:
“Oh no no, [there was] never a movie. I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome.
We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first… really right when the »

While promoting his upcoming "Winter's Tale" film, Akiva Goldsman spoke about the sequel to Will Smith's "I Am Legend" that never actually happened despite the fact that the first movie grossed almost $600 million at the box office. So why didn't we get a sequel? "Oh we tried," he said. "There were scripts. We really tried. We wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did [another] really interesting prequel that [took place] later, which was right after the first [outbreak]. Right when the population of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo." It was a year after "I Am Legend" hit theaters that Smith started talking about a prequel being in the works, teasing that his dog would return, »
Akiva Goldsman, out stumping for his feature directing debut Winter’s Tale, chatted with iO9 about the I Am Legend sequel that never came to be. The writer and producer spoke rather openly about the project, which Hollywood seemed desperate to get Will Smith back for- despite his character’s fate in the original film. But it seems that this one went the way of Independence Day 2, with Smith refusing to take part in any planned follow-ups. Without Smith, there could be no I Am Legend 2, so Goldsman talked a bit about what might have been:
“I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first… really right when the population of of humans became pretty decimated. »

Even though (Spoiler Alert) both Will Smith and his dog died during the epic climax of I Am Legend, Warner Bros. was desperate to get a sequel off the ground due to the movie's overwhelming success. And they went to some pretty insane lengths to justify a story. Sadly, I Am Legend 2 never got off the ground and languished in development Hell for a long period before all involved walked away empty handed. Now, writer/producer Akiva Goldsman has revealed what some of those crazy ideas were.
Akiva Goldsman is out promoting his directorial feature Winter's Tale, which is in theaters this week just in time for Valentine's Day, and he was happy to share some of his failed script ideas for I Am Legend 2 with io9.
Here, he explains how they wrote both a prequel, which involves the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and a sequel. He also mentions a Dark Seeker Elephant, »
Some two years ago, many an eyebrow was raised when a report emerged claiming that Warner Bros. had begun development on a sequel to the sci-fi post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend as a new starring vehicle for Will Smith – seeing how his character from the first movie, scientist Robert Neville, was having trouble with things like breathing and being alive by the movie’s end (unlike in the alternate conclusion to the film that had been originally shot, but later discarded for the theatrical cut).
