The final episode of the first season of Marvel 616 was about a Floridian High school, who were attempting to implement a drama course and used some short Marvel one act plays as their text. Though good, I'm again wondering exactly why this story was chosen.
Brandon High School, in Florida, does not have a full time Theatre programme, something which teacher Courtney Kyle wishes to change. Looking for an immediate way to connect with students, she orders two one-act plays, that Marvel have produced involving a few of their characters. A story about Squirrel Girl, and another about Ms. Marvel do generate a lot of interest, but there is much work to be done before opening night.
Briefly about this particular episode. The various teenagers we meet are all likeable kids, many have to overcome shyness in order to participate and they struggle with the basics of learning lines and blocking like we all would. My personal favourite was Karl, who really brought to life the struggle of making a tree to be part of the scene. Alison Brie makes it the two episodes in this series directed by "Community" alumni and does a fine job. It was charming but . . .
. . . and here I'm going to talk more about the series. Was it really a story I needed to hear? I only feel like a couple of the documentaries that made up this series were actually worth telling, those being the Toy one and the first one, about Japanese Spider-Man. The rest, though full of appealing and nice people I'm not sure I really got much from. I didn't hate them, I didn't find them boring, or badly made, but I'm feeling like there must be more compelling stories from around the Marvel world, that could be told.
I hoping that they decide to make more in this series in the future though and perhaps, maybe even with a touch more critical eye on themselves, those tales can be told.
