Mikael Håfström attended exorcisms to prepare for directing the film. He was not allowed to witness them, but he could hear what was happening from outside the door.
The language Rutger Hauer speaks is Hungarian. It can be translated as: "My love, My flower, My bliss"

The first trailer for the film features music from Wojciech Kilar's score of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), which also starred Anthony Hopkins.

The Kovak & Son Funeral Home is supposed to be set in Dixon, IL 61021 as seen in the letter from Italy Michael gets at the end of the movie. However the area code on the Funeral Home sign shown just prior to starts with "312" referencing Chicago's North Loop over 100 miles and nearly two hours apart.

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

The writing on Father Lucas's wall ("Fi sydd bia fe nawr") is Welsh, and translates to "He belongs to me now". Which is what Lucas utters when he is possessed.
The image used to describe the demon Baal is usually that of a man, a cat, a toad, or a combination of all of them. Lucas house is infested with cats, as well as toads in the fountain.
