Messiah: Netflix orders new faith-based series

David Crow Kirsten Howard Nov 17, 2017

At Netflix, Messiah will chronicle the world's reaction to a man thousands call "the Messiah" emerging from the Middle East...

The Word of God is good. It is also very lucrative. Ever since the days of silent films, the Bible has been big business in Hollywood. And as we travel ever further into 'peak television’s' new era of streaming, that one constant remains. However, the officially greenlit series Messiah, at least on its premise, promises to be a challenging new take on faith-based content.

First announced as in-development last spring, Netflix officially ordered a 10-episode series of Messiah yesterday, which is likely to be a controversial and highly publicised series when it eventually drops. Created by Michael Petroni, who has developed the project with producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, the series looks to provocatively consider the emergence (or reemergence?) of a figure claiming

New Mutants Replaces Rosario Dawson with Alice Braga

New Mutants Replaces Rosario Dawson with Alice Braga
Just a month after Rosario Dawson entered talks to play Dr. Celia Reyes in 20th Century Fox's The New Mutants, the actress has backed out of the role, with Alice Braga stepping in to replace her. No reason for Rosario Dawson's departure was given, but with production slated to begin next month in Boston, it's easy to see why a replacement was found so quickly. It hasn't been confirmed how many other roles still need to be filled as we get closer and closer to production getting under way.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on this casting update, with Alice Braga joining an ensemble that already includes a talented cast of youngsters. Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams plays Wolfsbane, with Split star Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, 13 Reasons Why star Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton as Cannonball and The Originals star Blu Hunt as Mirage.

Psychologist Peter Bower’s life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers that the patients he has been seeing are ghosts. Risking his own sanity, Peter delves into his past to uncover a terrifying secret which only he can put right.

Adrien Brody is the youngest performer to ever win the award for Best Actor at the Oscars, but like the Halle Berry’s and Geena Davis’s of this world, Brody struggled to capitalise on this success, appearing in mostly forgettable movies that failed to make use of his potential. You probably have some idea where I might be going with this…

An Australian supernatural mystery starring Brody sounds like it should be one of the horror highlights of the year, particularly in the wake of The Babadook’s success, but

40 Great Horror Films for the Halloween Season Part 4: 10-1

Movies 10-1

10. Videodrome (1983) directed by David Cronenberg

In David Cronenberg’s world, sex hurts so good; it’s innately disgusting and primeval but at the same time beautiful and becoming. (Kind of like sex in the real world, when you think about it.) Bodies degenerate and mental states corrode under the influence of lust, and yet something new is engendered by the collision of bodies, bodily fluids, the ripping of flesh and the mangling of organs. Through the carrion of ugly comes the attractive flesh, the new flesh. Videodrome, as Jonathan Lethem once quipped, remains Cronenberg’s most penetrative film; he creates a world at once rooted in modernity circa 1983–a world afraid of the advent of television usurping our humanity, over-stimulated times ushering in the end times–and existing in a timeless, placeless vacuum. It’s vast and claustrophobic, prescient and paranoid, of the same lineage as early James Cameron

Noomi Rapace Finds Another Thriller in Mikael Hafstrom's 'Unlocked'

Over the past few years, Prometheus star Noomie Rapace has found some unique thrillers to sink her teeth into on the big screen. Dead Man Down was a refreshing, quiet thriller, while Passion was erotic and sensual, and coming up later this year she has Child 44 and The Drop, both films with Tom Hardy. Now Deadline has word on a new thriller called Unlocked being set up as an indie project. The story will see the actress playing a female CIA interrogator duped into getting a terrorist to provide key information to the wrong side, thrusting her into the middle of a plan for a devastating biological attack in London. Read on! Mikael Hafstrom, who helmed last year's silly prison escape thriller Escape Plan with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone will direct Unlocked, and we just hope it's better than previous efforts like The Rite and 1408.
