Phil’s Ten Worst Movies of 2014

22 December 2014 7:43 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

If you’ve read my Top 10 Movies of 2014 list, you’ll know I proclaimed the vast amount of really good movies released this year but for all the good movies, there has to be some bad… And the bad were Really bad this year. From unfunny comedies to weird vanity projects that were seemingly made just for friends and family of the film makers attached, to some truly awful horror movies it seems that 2014 will be marked by some truly terrible films – some of which made it to the big screen!

The criteria is the same as my “best of” list: it has to be a movie I’ve seen this year, one that was released this year, i.e. making its UK debut, or a new movie that I’ve seen at a film festival that might not necessarily have been distributed as of yet. Also, the cut off »

The Scarehouse Hosts a Couple of Torture Devices in these Two Movie Clips

19 September 2014 11:26 AM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Director Gavin Michael Booth has released two clips for his upcoming film The Scarehouse. This film, which was shot in Windsor, Ontario, involves a group of sorority sisters and revenge. This film has recently been completed. D Films will distribute this title in Canada and the film will have its World Premiere in Windsor, this October 5th. The two clips, titled "I Can Still See Some Fat" and "Try More Clothes" are below. This tale of revenge begins with six sorority sisters. These friends show up at a haunted attraction, which is being run by a couple of their former club members. And, this attraction has been rigged - for murder! Understandably, this film has a large female cast. The cast includes a few regulars of the horror genre. The film stars Sarah Booth (Deadfall) and Kimberly-Sue Murray (The Colony). As well, Dani Barker and Teagan Vincze star. Fans of »

The Hey U Guys Instant Watching Guide – July 28th 2014

29 July 2014 5:16 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The Killing was an American remake from AMC based on the nordic noir show popularised over here by showings on BBC 4. The Us version moved things to Seattle where it rained constantly and revolved around the murder of Rosie Larson. Unfairly compared to Twin Peaks when it debuted, it was nonetheless something of a hit on Channel 4 for at least two seasons. I lost track of it around the mid-point of season two, not because I didn’t like it, I enjoyed it lots despite its grimness but it became impossible to keep up with the weekly scheduled showings and 4Od was, and still is not very good. From what I hear season two wrapped up the murder of Larson and season three moved on to a new mystery which was just as gripping.

The reason I mention this anyway is that like Arrested Development, Netflix has picked up »

Scrambled Transmission: Eubank’s Sophomore Effort Relies on Visual Strengths

William Eubank expands his brand of cerebral sci-fi with sophomore effort, The Signal, following up from the 2011 space set debut, Love (which might be interesting to revisit after the success of Gravity). With incredible ingenuity, this lo-fi concept is showcased within an amazing visual design, and the fantastic look of the film blends perfectly with a creepy and unnerving set-up. However, about mid-way through our main characters’ ordeal, substance begins to feel a bit eschewed for style, the narrative hitting a rather stale plateau as it coasts to a dramatic third act with a compounded twist that would have seemed more effective had there been sharper development of its ideas.

DVD Review: 'The Colony'

20 January 2014 6:18 AM, PST | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★☆☆☆Jeff Renfroe's The Colony (2013) paints a bleak picture of humanity's future; a post-apocalyptic world where climate change has left the Earth shrouded in a permanent deluge of ice and snow. Starring Kevin Zegers and nineties action movie luminaries Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton, what at first promises to be a taut survival procedural soon reveals itself to be a far darker and carnivorous beast. Deep under the frozen Earth's surface, Sam (Zegers) and what's left of his dwindling human colony scrape by on meagre rations, dreaming of a global thaw that will lead to their ultimate return to the land above.

The Colony DVD Review

18 January 2014 5:12 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Jeff Renfroe,

Starring: Kevin Zegers, Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton, Charlotte Sullivan, Dru Viergever,

 Running Time: 96 Minutes

Certificate: 18

The Colony is a post-apocalyptic thriller that follows many of the subgenre’s staples. Set in a world where it just doesn’t stop snowing and mankind has been forced underground, a colony of survivors investigate the absence of contact with another colony only to find a deranged group of merciless cannibals. As the plot suggests, themes of survival and humanity facing great adversity are quickly displaced with fast and confusing action sequences.

It’s a lovely film to look at at times, with the outside sequences making the most of some believable CGI and green screen. The world truly feels lifeless and this heightens many of the early political arguments between Fishburne’s trustworthy leader, and Paxton’s off the rails, tough love, second in command. Both give it their all, »

Ricky D’s 20 Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2014

10. Poltergeist

Directed by Gil Kenan

Written by David Lindsay-Abaire

USA

Release Date: November 14th

Production recently wrapped on the Poltergeist remake with Gil Kenan (Monster House) in the director’s chair and Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) producing. Little is known as they continue to put the movie together in post-production, but we do have a few details, beginning with the cast which includes Sam Rockwell (Moon), Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris. We are also told that the psychic Angina (played originally by Zelda Rubinstein), isn’t going to be revived for the remake. Instead, they are replacing her character with a team of paranormal experts. Based on a vague plot summary, it sounds like the central plot points of the original movie are intact but other characters are added in, such as Carrigan Burke, a host of a TV show called Haunted House Cleaners, who stands in as the movie’s skeptic. »

‘The Colony’ Review

Stars: Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton, Kevin Zegars | Written and Directed by Jeff Renfroe

Forced underground by the next ice-age, the inhabitants of Colony 7 struggle to survive below the world s frozen surface. When they mysteriously lose contact with Colony 5, the only other known settlement, Briggs (Fishburne) decides to lead a dangerous mission into the frozen wasteland determined to discover their fate. When he and his team reach their destination, they discover a threat much worse than nature and must battle to save themselves and protect their fellow colonists in what might be humanity s last stand.

A new horror film, starring Bill Paxton and also featuring Laurence Fishburne? Has to be on to a winner right? The Colony was advertised as a “The Thing” style horror, with plenty of snow bound terrors within. Instead we get a badly paced, poorly acted, sub-par Ghosts of Mars rip-off set in a post-apocalyptic ice age. »
