A merchant and his wolf deity, an TV-14 rated, rather witty tale of capitalism, 11 September 2011
Author: Silas Austin from United States

If you get the parody title of the review give yourself a pat on the back. Now to the review. Before watching Spice and Wolf I didn't know what to expect. After watching I was amazed that an amine about a merchant, his half wolf friend and his business could be so entertaining.

Spice and Wolf takes place in a medieval like universe where the church is becoming more and more powerful and paganism is slowly being replaced by the latter. An ancient deity known as Holo(Horo in the Japanese verison) noticing this becomes disillusioned. The people that once depended on her to give them good corps have decided they can farm on their own and some even doubt her existence. Seeing that shes no longer needed she stows away with our other protagonist Kraft Lawrence and the story begins.

The series has quiet a few characters but Holo and Lawrence are the only ones that play major roles. I prefer this in any story because than we are able to care more about the main characters. Holo and Lawrence are likable enough. Lawrence is a merchant that wants to open a shop of his own some day. Holo is an 600 year old, alcoholic, pagan god who's true form is a giant wolf, but takes the form of a 15 year-old girl with a tail(great catch Lawrence your parents will love her),who wants to head back to her home in the north. The characters' relationship is handled well, its not turned into a romance, nor is it just two people partnered at random, its two people who's relationship slowly grows as the story goes on. Had it been done differently it probably would have damaged the product, but it didn't.

The dubbing and dialog is some of the greatest I've heard, characters talked realistically and at worse we had a forced accent but its still good. The animated environment was great but the character design seems out of place. With a dead serious back ground but almost cartoonish character designs it may look a little awkward. The nudity was also weird, you get to see Holo nude but they leave out some obvious details. It made me wonder why it was even in the show to begin with. Even with all its faults, Spice and Wolf still manages to be a watchable product.

In the end I recommend Spice and Wolf to anyone who wants to see something a little different. I will say if your looking for action you won't find it here, instead we get development in to the characters' relationship and realistic business strategies. All in all it earned its 8 out of 10.
