THE LINEUP – The Stanley Devlin Case- 1957
During the 1950's there were two Police series that rose to the top. DRAGNET and THE LINEUP were both solid Police procedurals that showed how the everyday life of a Detective was. The LINEUP ran between 1954 and 1960 with a total of 200 episodes produced. The leads were played by Tom Tully and Warner Anderson as a pair of San Francisco Police Detectives. This particular episode is the 111th episode of the series.
The manager of a small book publisher, Robert Hutton, gets a threatening letter in the mail. Cough up 10 large or his secret will be told. Hutton's secretary, Eve Miller calls the Police over the letter. Detectives Tom Tully and Warner Anderson draw the case. They ask Hutton if he has any idea who might have sent the letter and what is this secret. Hutton blows off the matter as a crank letter. It had been Eve Miller who had called in the Police.
The letter is handed over to the lab boys for any possible prints etc. They also let the Post Office Inspectors in on the case. Later that day, Hutton's secretary, Miller calls and asks the Detectives to meet her at her apartment. She tells the Detectives that she thinks her brother, Greg Roman, might be mixed up in the blackmail attempt. Roman, a former employee of the same publisher, had been let go by Hutton some months before. Miller says he was very upset over the firing.
The Police, now with a photo of Roman, visit the post office sub-station the blackmail letter had been mailed from. The clerk id's the photo as the man who had mailed the special delivery letter. The Police now wait for Roman to make his next move. He calls and arranges a cash drop at a city square.
The Police stake out the location and wait. Hutton drops off the blackmail payment at the site. Roman now enters the square and picks up the bag of cash. Needless to say he is quickly grabbed up. It turns out Roman had no blackmail material on Hutton. He just figured everyone had an event from their past to cover up. Roman is cuffed and hauled off for his forthcoming extended stay on the State's dime.
Pretty Eve Miller was an up and comer in the early 50's with several top five billed roles in films like, THE WINNING TEAM, THE BIG TREES, KANSAS PACIFIC and APRIL IN Paris. By the mid 1950's she was mainly doing TV spots, and by 1961 was out of the business. She committed suicide in 1973 at the age of 50.
