Undeterred by scathing reviews and a less-than-stellar box office haul, Warner Bros. has officially jump-started pre-production on Suicide Squad 2, effectively sending the Internet into a tailspin in the process.
Amid last night’s hullabaloo, Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson emerged as an early frontrunner to take the reins, with additional reports revealing that the likes of Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), and Daniel Espinosa (Life) have also cropped up on the studio’s preliminary shortlist. It’s early, early days, but Variety reporter Justin Kroll has provided some context to the ongoing situation, noting that, as of now, Gibson is Warner’s first choice to helm Suicide Squad 2, and that the sequel is essentially his, should he sign along the dotted line.

Barring anything else crazy happening by the end of Friday, this week’s winner in the category of “Wtf News” belongs to yesterday’s reports that Mel Gibson is in early talks to direct “Suicide Squad 2.” It’s not a done deal and there are other contenders in the mix — Daniel Espinosa (“Safe House,” the upcoming sci-fi “Life“), Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland,” “Gangster Squad“), and Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies,” “50/50“) — but that Gibson is even at the table is surprising.

Sources tell THR that talks are still in the early stages and Gibson is currently reviewing the material to familiarize himself with the franchise. Gibson previously picked up two Oscars for his “Braveheart” and it currently in contention for Best Picture for this year’s nominated “Hacksaw Ridge.”
But Gibson is not the only one being considered to helm the superhero sequel. According to Variety, Daniel Espinosa (“Safe House”), Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies,” “The Night Before”) and Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”) are also among the contenders to sit in the director’s chair. »

Warner Bros has Mel Gibson on a shortlist of directors to put together Suicide Squad 2...
Might the rehabilitation of Mel Gibson back into Hollywood be complete? His most recent film as director, Hacksaw Ridge, has proved a success, and earned Gibson another Best Director Oscar nomination. And now it’s being reported that Warner Bros has him on the shortlist to direct Suicide Squad 2.

With the director of the first Suicide Squad, David Ayer, set to focus on Gotham City Sirens instead (the movie that brings together female foes such as Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn), that leaves a vacancy for Suicide Squad 2. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Warner Bros is “courting” Gibson to direct the new film. »
While attending a screening of Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson confirmed that the talks with Warner Bros regarding Suicide Squad 2 were indeed happening, but as of this writing, they are no where near any sort of deal.
"It's kind of a first date," he told the moderator. You can take a look at the video below, though be warned that the audio is very low.
Also of note from Variety reporter Justin Kroll:
Couple updates on the Suicide Squad director search since I posted after a few calls. First if Mel wants it, it's his.

After much uncertainty, it seems as if we’ll definitely be getting a Suicide Squad 2. Those box office numbers proved to be strong enough to justify a sequel and now, Warner Bros. is on the hunt for a director. Earlier today, we heard that Mel Gibson was in talks, along with Daniel Espinosa and tonight, Variety is reporting that Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer and Warm Bodies‘ Jonathan Levine are also being eyed by the studio to take the helm.
From what we understand, there’s no clear frontrunner at the moment, given that it’s so early on in the search, and it’s expected that additional names will be added to the shortlist before a decision is made. When WB will settle on someone is unknown, but the project is definitely a priority »

Warner Bros. has begun the search for the director who will take over the reins for the sequel to box office hit “Suicide Squad.” Mel Gibson is perhaps the most surprising of the handful of possibilities.
Sources tell Variety that in addition to Gibson, Warners has met with — or is planning to meet with — Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”), Daniel Espinosa (“Safe House”), and Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies”).
Warner Bros. had no comment.
Insiders say the list could grow and that there is no front-runner at the moment.
David Ayer wrote and directed the original pic that starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. The pic followed a group of villains and antiheroes — including Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang, and Killer Croc — who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences. »

Suicide Squad may not have fared particularly well with critics, but it was a box office success, so you probably won't be too surprised to learn that a sequel is in the early stages in development. However, in a very unexpected twist, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Mel Gibson is in early talks to take the helm of the movie! He's a long way off signing up to direct, and the trade adds that he's currently familiarising himself with the comic books to see if it's a property he would be interested in working on. Warner Bros. is hedging their bets, though, as Daniel Espinosa (Safe) is also being considered along with a number of others that Variety lists as being Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies). With Suicide Squad's David Ayer busy working on Gotham City Sirens, it makes sense that he's not returning, and Gibson »
With so many reboots and sequels happening in Hollywood, there is a lot of desire for some original, or at least non-franchise related movies. Sony is going to provide sci-fi fans with something original next month in the form of Life, which features Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds dealing with a deadly new form of life discovered on Mars. Now, Sony has released a brand new, full-length trailer for Life that gives us a much better idea of what to expect from the new sci-fi thriller.
Sony Pictures uploaded the brand new trailer online, which gives us our best look at Life yet. The studio is also airing a couple of Super Bowl spots for the movie, which have also been released online already. This new trailer expands on what we saw in the first teaser and looks to be a serious homage to Ridley Scott's original Alien. In the video, »
Ryan Reynolds got a big boost to his career last year with Deadpool, and while we have to wait a while for Deadpool 2, we are going to be seeing him back on the big screen very soon. He is going to be starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the new sci-fi thriller Life, which just so happens to be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who penned the screenplay for Deadpool. Now, Sony Pictures has released their brand new Super Bowl spot for Life online.
Sony clearly has a lot of confidence in Life, or at the very least they want to get as many eyeballs on it as possible, since a 30-second slot of ad time cost an average of $5 million. In any case, this new video gives us a nice, brisk look at what to expect from the movie, which will be hitting theaters late next month. »

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick made their names with 2009’s Zombieland, but it was last year’s Deadpool that truly proved their worth. Sizzling with wit, cleverness and pop culture references for days, the screenwriters became some of the most celebrated pens of 2016, and their talents weren’t ignored by 20th Century Fox. They were quickly re-assigned to write Deadpool 2, but now they’ve got some bigger challenges ahead of them.
For instance, they’re going to help usher the X-Force, notably Domino and Cable, into the X-Men cinematic universe, and in a recent interview, they discussed how exactly they’ll approach such a task. Speaking with Collider, Reese and Wernick talked about the challenging prospect and how they hope to ease these new characters into the Merc with the Mouth’s hotly-anticipated sequel.
“There is a responsibility we have to the X-Force universe, and I do think we »

Now, Harrelson is opening up just ever so slightly about what it is he's doing in the Star Wars universe. And he's not necessarily a 'good guy'.
Harrelson was speaking with Mashable when the subject of his Han Solo movie came up. He's been out and about promoting his directorial debut Lost in London, but everyone would rather know more about his role as Han's father figure. Harrelson played a somewhat similar mentor role in The Hunger Games. But this guy will be more of a scoundrel. He says this about joining that galaxy far, far away.
"I'm a mentor to Han, but I'm also a bit of a criminal. »
