When Laura comes in the office, she is in sedated mood. She had a terrible time with a young patient in the hospital. It was a young girl that went for the surgical removal of a mole in her face. As the operation is ended, the girl developed a sudden complication, aggravated by the surgeon not being in the room. She almost caused the girl's death by a slight mistake she made, something that happened when she was not paying attention to the situation by thinking about Paul.
Paul indicates he would like to stop therapy for a while because he feels she needs a rest from the terrible situation she finds herself. Laura begins recounting her affair with David, the friend of the family from California that took her in after the death of her mother. David and his wife were the perfect hosts. All that changed when David had to come to Washington for a trial he was involved in. Laura developed a big crush on the man, who came to stay at her house, finally seducing him.
Laura declares she ended the relationship with Alex. It appears she was only with the pilot to spite Paul. As the session is ending, Laura goes to inspect Alex's coffee machine. There is a moment of tension as Paul feels her presence. As she is about to leave, she comes to the therapist and embraces him. There is a moment when his hands reach for her, but then, she leaves.
Rodrigo Garcia directed the Amy Lippman screenplay. It was a good episode where the tensions between Laura and Paul come to an almost collision, but his cooler head prevails. Excellent acting from Gabriel Byrne and Melissa George.
